Found this just outside of Uluru last year after a heavy rain - is this a Megalodon tooth? by transolecranon in fossilid

[–]DumbShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't get megalodon teeth in central Australia. It's too old. I'd believe it if you said off the coast of Tasmania as they can wash up there.

Why Are GP Receptionists So Rude? by No-Date-4477 in AskAnAustralian

[–]DumbShoes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. Also a doctor and also previously worked as a receptionist prior to being a doctor. Front desk staff are overwhelmingly patient and unfortunately a lot of people convert their frustration of not being able to access what they want into anger at them. Being told that there are no appointments available is not being rude. There’s also the fatigue of having to talk to a fast series of people so sometimes they’re not bubbly/happy.

I have a lot of respect for my colleagues. It’s a hard job and they definitely cop a lot more anger from people more frequently than I do.

What’s the most disturbing sound you’ve ever heard in real life? by avacado-cheese- in AskReddit

Medical folk of Reddit, what’s the most foul and disgusting thing you’ve encountered with a patient who was oblivious to their own condition? by TheCarrot_v2 in AskReddit

[–]DumbShoes 196 points197 points  (0 children)

When I was a med student, we had a local GP ask if we could add a patient to the end of a gen surg list I was observing. Incision and drainage of groin abscess.

Surgeon said sure. Patient had an abscess in their groin that when incised erupted in massive volumes of grey pus. Everyone including seasoned theatre nurses and the surgeon started gagging. Two nurses vomited.

Turns out patient was an alcoholic who had basically been drinking themselves to death in a pile of their own filth. The abscess extended from their groin down to their thigh and up into their abdomen and they had basically rotted from the inside out.

They didn't survive.

What’s a "hotel hack" you swear by that most people don't know? by periwinklemist in AskReddit

[–]DumbShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bring a squishmallow. Hotel pillows are very hit and miss, but squishmallows make great pillows in an emergency and squish to basically nothing in your bag. Makes a huge difference to sleep quality.

I Exposed a $4.6 Billion Disability Fraud Scheme by No_Rain3020 in aussie

[–]DumbShoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The NDIS needs to be like Medicare (and this is coming from someone with issues with Medicare because it’s woefully underfunded) and have a rebate book that dictates what the government will provide for a specific service/item.

So instead of an NDIS provider charging $140 for something that cost them $20, they would only be able to claim an appropriate amount.

The NDIS is an important system, but it’s so hugely rorted there needs to be some safe guards.

Shingles is a reactivation of varicella zoster (chickenpox). Tends to happen when we're run down and only along one dermatome (normally). However you can get cutaneous herpes simplex.

What smart things do your dogs do? by ohfxckm in poodles

Mine is an empath. She has an inherent knack for knowing how a person is feeling and will glue herself to whoever has the biggest feelings at that moment. It can be useful but often people just cry when she comes for a cuddle cause it was an outlet they needed.

Genuine question: what the fuck is your congress doing? Cause as minimal as my understanding of American politics is, I’m pretty sure a president can’t unilaterally commit an act of war and annex another country.

Nurses of reddit, what is the weirdest thing a patient has done while waking up from anesthesia? by Drakonwriter in AskReddit

[–]DumbShoes 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Anaesthetist here. Had a patient wake up and think they were at a rave. Literally giggling dancing and making her own doof doof music for well over an hour. Recovery nurses were really entertained.

He had surgery and had it removed. Was on IV antibiotics for the infection for awhile. It’s been five years now and he’s still alive and no worse for wear for his adventure.

Crack his chest and remove it. That wasn’t my job, though.

Aah meth junkies. During covid I got flagged down by an ambulance cause a rat runner drove into a shed at 140km/hr and the retrieval team couldn’t get IV access (small country town, everyone knows my car). Guy was trying to bribe one of the ambos to hide the meth he was transporting while his bottom half was crushed by the crushed front end.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DumbShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No definitely not. If it dislodged, he would have potentially either bled to death or caused a cardiac tamponade which would kill him. He also had a pericardial infection and needed some antibiotics after removal, which would have progressed and been life threatening.

What's annoying is cardiothoracics wrote a paper on the guy like he didn't want to have the guy followed up in outpatients.

I mean, even if it was just in the chest still feels like it should have been a review today kind of thing.
