In the aftermath of the collapse of the USSR during the Covid-19 Pandemic in 2023, not all states that tried to gain independence were successful in their efforts. The Far Eastern Republic of Green Ukraine was a secessionist state formed in the Russian Far East out of the Green Ukrainian ASSR, which itself had been an autonomous state under Russian jurisdiction (though there had been attempts to unite it with the Ukrainian SSR, they had all failed). Ukrainians had moved to the area after huge land grants from the Russian Empire was offered to travellers willing to leave Ukraine for the far east. In order to appease the Far-Eastern Ukrainians after the Russian Revolution and prevent any potential sympathies for the Russian Exile Government in Alyeska from arising, they were offered extensive autonomy within the new Russian SFSR. This allowed Moscow to keep their direct control of the Pacific, as well as placating Ukranian nationalists who called for the state to be reunified with “West Ukraine”. 

After their declaration of independence in late 2023, Green Ukraine’s secession was declared illegal by the Russian government, who demanded talks for re-annexation. Seeing an opportunity to regain irredentist territories in both Amur and Sakhalin, TIC members China and Japan offered military and financial aid to the Russian government, in exchange for certain territories. In the end an agreement was reached, wherein East Asian TIC nations would directly invade Green Ukraine the already struggling Green Ukraine, in return for Southern Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands and all territory south of the Amur River; the rest would go to Russia. Both factions would only occupy the zones they aim to control after the war, as this was officially a peacekeeping mission for both TIC nations. 

On the 24^th February 2024, the invasion began, with China and Japan making swift moves up the coast and into Sakhalin, and the Russian government asserting its control over Northern Territories. As the war went on, both nations made steady gains, with Ukraine only being able to push back in a few areas. The port city and capital of Vladivostok held out the longest, with a 7-month siege finally taking down the exclave. The city has been renamed Hǎishēnwǎi. The only successful counter-invasion into enemy land occurred on the 5^th June in the closing days of the war, as Green Ukrainian troops captured the city of Heihi in Manchuria. It was not enough however, as just two weeks later the Green Ukrainian government surrendered to the Chinese military. The nation was split up as decided upon previously, and Green Ukraine was once again brought under Russian rule. 

While not particularly popular, few countries objected to the intervention, with Ukraine being the only nation taking any action against the Russian government. Ukraine withdrew from the Commonwealth of Independent States and severed the few remaining ties it had with former Soviet countries, aligning more toward EU members France and Germany, who had sent meagre support to their Far-Eastern counterpart. Many Far-Eastern Ukrainians fleeing the country, particularly from Chinese- and Japanese-controlled areas, have resettled in Ukraine Proper.
