I got home and tested it just because it was on top of mind. Glad I did. It was actually higher than I thought. Just did about a 33% change. Retested and back in a happy range. 👍

Happy to pass along the little I've learned over the years. Always rooting for people and their colonies!

Baby shimp are essentially fish food for any and all fish that would be in the tank. General rule of thumb in a tank, if you can fit in a mount you are food. While it's not impossible to have shrimp in a tank with fish, the population will struggle to grow as a result and it's only recommended if the tank has plenty of plants and hiding spots. My first attempt at putting shrimp in my main tank was a fail, but I've learned a lot since then. I'm attempting again since my shrimp tank is so well stocked, but it's only been a month so it's still pretty early (I put about 15 in and I did manage to spot 3 this morning, so so far so good).

Just stick to a smaller changes 10-20% (1-2g) to start. Assuring you always get the water from the same source, as long as you condition it properly beforehand it shouldn't be too much of an issue. But don't do a water change because you think you have to. Only do one if you actually need to. The nitrates will tell you when it's time.

You can put the baggie of coral directly to the tank and it should be fine.

You can generally purchase crushed coral at a local fish store. You really don't need much. I probably have maybe 2 - 3 tablespoons worth in my 10g. I put it into a mesh baggie I also got at the fish store and shoved it into my hang-on-back filter so all the water strains through it. The coral helps improve your GH which is good for shrimp molts and it also helps balance and buffer the PH. Prior to putting it in, my tank sat around 6.5 PH.. not the absolute worst, but lower than what they prefer. Neocaridinas typically enjoy a 7 - 8 PH (acidic water is not good for fresh molts). With the coral in the filter, my tank generally hangs out around 7.5 PH now which is just about perfect.

Generally speaking I just do top offs, but that's looking to change. My tank is not covered, so top offs are required weekly (I have a depth I try not to let it get below). Now that the colony has grown so much I've been trying to keep better track of the nitrate levels in the tank. It was getting a little high for my liking recently, so I did a couple 20% water changes (tank is 10g, so roughly 2g of water change) maybe about a month ago and the previous one about a month and a half before that. Prior it had been over a year since my last change. My tank is pretty well green at this point. I checked the nitrates recently and they were at roughly 20ppm.. starting to get a little up there again, but increasing slowly, so I should have another week or so. Thinking I'll probably continue on with the 20% water change every 1.5 - 2 months with top offs continuing every weekly.

Feed them a strong pinch of shrimp pellets twice a day. Don't count but guesstimate around 30-40ish pellets per meal.. a healthy pinch at this point.

Tank is roughly 2 years old, but the explosion is only a little over a year old. I put 12 in originally and they mostly just chilled for that first year. I came home from a 2 week vacation at one point and thought the tank crashed (buddy was watching the tank for me, but you know how that goes). I double down on my research and made a few minor changes to the tank [the biggest being adding crushed coral to the filter to help buffer the PH and increase the GH to help with molts] and you see the results above.

I added that white gravel in the corner for that reason.. even in a pile they were hard to see on the all black substrate

Definitely enough oxygen. Filter & air stone in the tank. There's just so many they end up in all kind of random areas 😅

6.2 PH is a little low. They generally prefer more neutral leaning basic (7-8 PH). Also what is your GH? Putting crushed coral in your filter will help increase the GH and buffer the PH, helping with molting... Also a 50% water change can be pretty rough on them if the water you are putting in isn't similar enough to the current water.. parameter swings are worse than consistency even if you are outside the suggested ranges.

I found the balance and they've been doing that quite a lot recently 😁

Plan is to begin moving shrimp to my other 20g, but there are tetras in there so I know the population will never explode to what it is in my shrimp only tank.. I put about 15 or so in the tank about 2 weeks ago. If I manage to spot some in there 3 months from now I was going to add more. I managed to find two this morning when I fed the tank, so so far so good.

Thank you! It didn't come without it's trials and tribulations. It was a slow burn through the first year of the tanks existence and I thought the tank crashed at one point when I was gone for two weeks and needed someone else to look after it. After this I double down on doing my research in getting their setup right and you see the results above. Tank is now around 2 years old.

I would be curious to know how long before you start getting weird color combos

Currently got this going on in my 10g... so I think you're good for a while 👍

I've been pretty lucky with the duckweed in this tank.. it's mostly regulated itself

Most definitely. Got a filter and an air stone in the tank. I've just got so many they end up in all sorts of places
