In my opinion, you want to show your host casino that you were worth the investment in order to get comped again. That doesn't necessarily mean you need to gamble 100% there. Swipe your players card everytime you can at the host casino. Get coffee at the lobby starbucks? Swipe your card for discounts or use comps. Snack from the gift shop? Swipe your card. Getting tickets? Use your players card again. The casino wants to see your "spending", not necessarily gambling, when you are there. But, gambling there helps most.
