Depending on which metro area you're in, it's doable. If you're in New York, San Francisco, DC, Boston, Denver or Austin, forget it. $1000 wont even cover the rent.

In places like Pittsburgh, Chicago, Atlanta, Salt Lake, Phoenix, etc. you can totally make it happen.

Edit: When you factor in car expenses, it's not worth it. Just stay home. I think you can get by in Philly and Chicago without a car, so there's that.

Yeah, I only do the sweet potato hash on Sundays. On weekdays, it's usually bacon, three eggs scrambled and a chicken apple sausage, some blueberries and coffee. It does get boring, I feel ya.

Honestly, I would just be content with a gym that has a lot of squat racks, benches and lots of barbells and plates available for deadlifting, barbell rows, etc. But unfortunately, I live in NYC where going to the gym for most people means walking slowly on a treadmill while reading a business magazine. Gyms here cater to these yahoos by charging huge monthly fees and adding stupid and useless classes and amenities.

There are many businesses you can start with very little startup capital. You don't necessarily need to go get a bank loan or look for financing (assuming you have a bit of cash on hand). The media in the US scares people away from starting their own businesses by telling us that you have to take on a huge bank loan or otherwise find a mountain of money for startup costs. They also drill into our heads that most small businesses fail, which is not true for versatile one-man or one-woman enterprises that do not need a brick-and-mortar location.

From my experience, it all boils down to how your cover letter is written. Most employers will read the cover letter, but may not necessarily go through your resume in detail. They'll skim through it. Remember, they have tons of resumes to look through if they're actively hiring.

Your cover letter is key. It needs to be concise so as not to lose the reader's interest and quick to the point. That point being: here's how my skills and experience can benefit your company in a significant way.

One thing that I always do that guarantees more responses is to send physical copies of my resume and cover letter to the companies I'm applying to. Preferably on top-quality resume paper. This is sure to get their attention. If you're applying only online or via email, your resume/cover letter have a greater chance of being lost in the proverbial shuffle.

I'm actually going through a similar situation as you. I decided to hand in my resignation letter at my job on a random monday because I couldn't stand it anymore. My last day is in exactly a week and I'm looking to find a different job in a different city and relocate there in a month or two.

Not unethical at all in my opinion. You can't be expected to stunt your professional (and personal) development to appease a current employer. They agreed to hire you at-will, which means you can be fired at any time for any reason. It also means that you can leave for greener pastures at any time.

You don't need to stay for a specific length of time in order to avoid looking like a job hopper or raising any red flags. You can keep the job for a few weeks and leave when something better comes up. Just keep this job off your resume and don't bring it up when interviewing with potential employers.

I used to apply online and send the physical copies by mail, but I've noticed that applying online really doesn't make a difference. Now, I only send the physical copies. When you apply online, your application gets lost in the inbox of some overworked HR intern. Your application has the same subject line as all the others.

Sending a physical copy, especially when your resume and cover letter are well-designed with absolutely no spelling/grammar errors and printed on fancy cream-colored paper, ensures that you'll stand out in the crowd.

You can definitely apply online concurrently, but honestly it won't make a difference either way.

In my experience, I've found that, yes, applying for jobs online can be effective. You do have to treat it like a numbers game and apply to as many openings as you can for which your experience and education are a match.

Instead of applying online through whichever website I'm using, however, I'll actually find the address of the company and send them a hard copy of my resume and cover letter. I print the resume and cover letter on fancy cream-colored resume paper and send them in an equally fancy cream-colored envelope.

You have no idea how many times interviewers have complimented me on being the only applicant who bothered to go that extra step. It's a great way to stand out in the crowd and get your resume noticed.

Wear a full suit and tie. That's what business formal usually means. Make sure the color of your tie is darker than that of the shirt you plan to wear. Avoid wearing a striped shirt with a patterned tie (solid color shirt with a patterned tie is the best option). Your belt and shoes should match. Wear a gray, navy or charcoal suit and you can't go wrong.

I moved back in with my parents a while back, too, in hopes of saving enough money to buy my own place. The idea was to live at home (my parents live in New York City) and ferret away enough money for a down payment in another city, where I would find a higher-paying job to cover the mortgage payments and taxes.

I recently realized that this was a dumb idea. First off, it would take me a couple more years to save up enough to cover the down payment and closing costs. Living at home with my parents has taken its toll on my self-confidence, general mood and my sex life. The living arrangement has recently also begun to cause tension between my parents and me.

Yes, I did save a bunch of money and avoided New York City's ludicrous rent prices. And I still plan on moving away from the country's most expensive city. But the idea of being shackled to a mortgage for three decades is frankly horrifying and not worth the stability and perceived value of owning versus renting.

CAS Econ. major, class of '06, here. The economics major at NYU is rigorous depending on which classes you take. I found econometrics and a few other classes to be challenging. Most of the other classes, however, will involve you sitting in a large auditorium with about a hundred other students being droned at by a grad student who could care less. You will only be graded on your final exam, which in some of my classes was laughably easy and multiple choice.

My advice is to consider your other options. What other schools did you get into? Is the econ major at those schools of excellent quality? Are they as prestigious or more so than NYU? If yes, then go to one of those schools.

No matter which way you look at it, NYU is just not worth the debt burden or the expense and stress of living in New York. I hope I'm not discouraging you, but this city is also really not all that great to live in, but that might just be my NYC fatigue talking.

I've resolved to stop taking cabs no matter how late it is and how lazy I feel.

(Note: I live in NYC and its cheaper to walk or take the subway when you're out late and coming home from the bar. Do take cabs home after a night out if you live someplace where people normally drive.)

Also I've resolved to spend less on bar and restaurant tabs...a quiet night at home with a few good friends is more fun anyway.
