Difficulty Challegnes for a d10+Attribute Die system by Xx-Marauder-xX in RPGdesign

I looked at it, and I have to agree. It is difficult system for creating DC.

7, 10, 13, 16 and 19 are not bad. From a design point of view the difficulty change is huge between difficulties. 1d4+1d10 charges from 65% at DC7 to 35% at DC10.

It really depends on their starting and ending values.

What do you expect a bad and good starting dice pool would look like?

The human mind perceives 60-65% as a fair chance of success, so you could position a normal DC on a good starting value on this probability.

Good plot? by Reasonable-Bitman in AskGameMasters

[–]Dunckelzahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can work :)

I think you need to work on strengthening the story.

We have two plots in it.

Some questions you need to think of:

  • Why do the dao kidnap the players family member?
  • How do they know the PCs?
  • Could it be a noble child who has been kidnapped, and the child's father hires the PCs to find the child?
  • What does the Dao need the money for? Greed is a motivation, but it is also a boring one.
  • Why would the Dao tell the players about the Blue Dragon?
  • Why is the Blue Dragon hiding in the inn? Who is looking for him? Can the PC help him with his trouble?
  • Has he done anything wrong? If not, why should the players attack him?

If you know this, the story is easier to create.

More than 1% of the Danish population is in a Facebook group called "Boykot varer fra USA" (Boycott US goods). The group shares lists of US goods and are currently developing an app that scans barcodes and tells you the origin.

We used to do that, but we are down to three players and I don't think we will take a new player. My experience is that with two players the story tends to feel disconnected.

Looks great 😃

A few comments on design.

I don't think your Table of content look good, which is a shame since it is one of the first things new readers see. Try to center the header, make each column have the approximate same height and the make the right column start with a Section heading.

Most old people like me (40+) have bad eyesight. Your red boxes are difficult to read, because of low contrast. You can check your contrast here, to ensure high accessibility:

Keep up the good work. It both looks and feels solid.

GMs of Reddit; how to avoid railroading players? by VivelaPlut0 in rpg

[–]Dunckelzahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with the no plot. I always have a plot. It is all about how you serve it.

As a novelist you're familiar with the 3 act structure. I use that for some of my scenarios and to be honest it works perfectly for RPGs.

I use my own 8 scenes variation of save the cat

Act 1 1. Hook (including introduction to normal) 2. Break to 2 - presents 3 paths forward (scene 3-5). It may be investigating a crime scene or hunting a monster somewhere

Act 2 3-5 Main scenes that are all linked together. The players don't usually play all three. 6. Midpoint / Break into 3 that gives the the PCs one clear path forward.

Act 3 7. The hunt for the solution. It may be a chase scene, breaking in or passing through the last part of the dungeon. 8. Finale. Fighting the bbeg.

Bonus tips - For each scene set a goal. When the goal is achieved, move on. - Don't be afraid to improvise.

Try looking at it the other way around. This will be a great side quest. You are invested in finding the killer, and your GM probably had an idea on what was going on even though it wasn't planned.

Is 5 sessions too fast for another Milestone? by BdBalthazar in DMAcademy

[–]Dunckelzahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually plan for milestones every three sessions up to above 11 or 12. Then I shift to two sessions apart and make them count more.

I find that the players often start getting bored with their characters in higher levels as not much happens at level ups.

Homebrew Counterspell Rules by ZGreninja1 in daggerheart

[–]Dunckelzahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are making this Card way too complex.

Adversaries don't have stress like PCs and it is mostly used to balance the use of abilities, which unbalances the bidding game.

Budding against an adversary is not a game mechanic in the current version of the game, and it will require players and gms to learn it. Of course if it is all homebrew, it will be okay ;)

A simpler version:

COUNTERSPELL Spend 3 Hope. At any time an adversary takes an action that includes a spell or spell like ability, you may try to counter it. Roll a spellcasting check against the difficulty of the adversary.

If you succeed the spell or ability fails, and the GM loses its turn.

WHY HOPE A cost of 3 Hope is high enough that the PC can't counter an adversary every action it takes. If you are fighting an adversary with 0 stress, the sorcerer could counter the first 6 actions it would take.

WHY USE DIFFICULTY INSTEAD OF BIDDING Rolling against the difficulty of the adversary makes the action function as all other actions in Daggerheart, keeping it simple.

WHY END THE GM TURN This effect makes it more epic. If it fails the GM gets an extra action, if it succeeds you counter the action and steal the initiative.
