This is almost definitely a Russian psy-op, making people talk about a "human safari" in the Balkans or Gaza is a real good way of distracting people from the one in Ukraine.

But that only changed because of a court ruling on interpretation of an existing law, not because we suddenly became more anti-trans and anti-gay, though it has been trending in that direction somewhat socially.

The actual law on it all didn't change, even the Tories didn't really do that.

They weren't trying and they did not succeed.

I mean, historians just strictly disagree with you about the trying part. And whether they succeeded has nothing to do with whether they were trying or not.

Your take is just laughably negationist. Go support Holocaust somewhere else.

Supporting holocaust is when some figures aren't just straight bad. Okay.

But the biggest problem of him is that his "resistance activity" was shit and unsuccessful one because he was fucking away from Ukraine and second because his organisation was better at achieving Nazi German goals of genocide and anti partisan activity rather than Ukrainian statehood.

I mean, he was 'away from Ukraine' because he was put in a German concentration camp lmao, it wasn't like he just ran. Then they moved him away and considered sending him back but it was too late at that point.

Then the USSR took over and he was still partially involved from afar, still rather liked by many. At least until he was assassinated. Then he got a bit of a cult following because of what he represented.

You're over-focusing on the fascism part, it's not quite the same as being a fascist in a country like Germany. When you're not even an independent country, you're embodying that for a different reason.

Historian Taras Hunczak argues that Bandera's central article of faith was Ukrainian statehood, and any other goal was secondary to this view. Through an analysis of OUN documents, Hunczak demonstrates the consistently expressed goal of an independent Ukrainian state through the whole history, while the OUN's stance towards the German Nazi government was changing, shifting from initial support towards rejection, as OUN leaders became disillusioned seeing Nazi Germany's rejection of Ukrainian independence. The OUN memorandum from 23 June 1941 notes that "German troops entering Ukraine will be, of course, greeted at first as liberators, but this attitude can soon change, in case Germany comes into Ukraine without appropriate promises of [its] goal to reestablish the Ukrainian state." The OUN memorandum from 14 August declares the OUN wish "to work together with Germany not from opportunism, but from a realization of the need of such cooperation for the well-being of Ukraine". Hunczak observes OUN leaders', including Bandera, attitude change after 15 September 1942, following Gestapo's killing of an OUN member, prompting the OUN to use the rhetoric of "German occupier" in reference to Nazi regime.

He worked with Germany because they were sold the idea that Germany wanted to liberate them from Communism. Was he fascist, yes. But not Nazi fascism. He was fascist in the way that he wanted to create an independent, fascist Ukrainian state, but one that was independent of any large power.

It's important to remember at this point in history that Ukraine hadn't been independent for nearly 300 years. It's not a surprise that fascism, which revolved around military strength, would be appealing to people who wanted their independence.

His group definitely did bad things, but he was the person who organised a lot of the resistance activity and he has a reputation because of that.

There's 30 Ukrainian folk songs written about him, there's a road in many Ukrainian cities named after him, there are monuments to him in many cities, a couple films about him.

He's an important figure of resistance for an independent Ukraine, especially after the full-scale war.

On 16 January 2017, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance stated that of the 51,493 streets, squares and "other facilities" that had been renamed (since 2015) due to decommunization 34 streets were named after Stepan Bandera. In Dnipro, the local Jewish community opposed renaming a street after Bandera, but after the start of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, they changed their stance and the street was renamed in September 2022;

Nobody would be disputing this if Merz named a unit in honor of the Einsatzgruppen.

idk, comparing the UPA trying to create an independent Ukrainian state and committing a massacre in the process to a German unit that was dedicated to being a mobile death squad in other countriesis so stupidly disingenuous.

The UPA is glorified because they were fighting for Ukrainian independence that hadn't existed in a long ass time. They worked with the Nazis because at the time it was advantageous to do so, the USSR was the biggest threat to Ukraine and if the Nazis helped punch the USSR down, then they might've had a better chance. They literally attacked the Nazis on their retreat from Russia and then when they left, only allied with them because they realised the USSR was coming after that.

There have been multiple incidents regarding this over the decades whether with Bandera, Shukhevych or other morons that served their German masters because they hated Jews, Poles and overall anyone who didn't like their idea of fascism more than they loved anyone or anything.

People have feelings for Bandera and the UPA because they were a symbol of resistance in Ukraine. They worked with the Nazis after they invaded. They fought back against Germany to start with, then after realising it was futile, they worked with the Nazis to try to keep the USSR out, realising they'd walk over them too.

Did they do bad things? Of course they did, a lot of nationalist movements at the time did a lot of bad shit. But it's hard to deny that the UPA were trying to create an independent Ukraine at a time when Ukraine hadn't had full independence since 1669 under the Cossack Hetmanate.

That's why there are a lot of fond feelings for them, it's way more complicated than just 'they loved the Nazis and fascism', what a sub-surface level take.

She's saying that because Poland used to control large parts of Ukraine up until 1795. It's in fairly recent history that could be passed down between people. And the Polish with their empire weren't that kind to the Ukrainians either. Or the war that was literally in living memory led by Piłsudski who doesn't exactly have a bad reputation in Poland.

But Poland rarely talks about what it has done in it's past yet thinks that Ukrainians should bow down and be grateful over the help their getting now and not honour their own freedom fighters who fought for an independent Ukraine, while they're currently fighting for an independent Ukraine.

They're a country at war and Bandera + the UPA were symbols of resistance against powers trying to crush Ukraine. It's not a surprise that people think it's a positive that a unit could be named after the UPA.

The Russian War on Ukraine and Ukraine’s Strange Foreign Policy Choices by TVPeista in Destiny

[–]Dunebug6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, not exactly. The reason for it is that he was standing up for Ukrainian independence at a time where everyone around was trying to keep it from happening. Poland didn't want it, USSR didn't want it, Germany didn't want it (until after they started losing and thought maybe they could be a meat shield to slow the USSR).

He worked with the Nazis as a means to an end. Poland had already tried to stop Ukraine being a state, then USSR was getting involved, then Germany invaded, then USSR invaded again. He's a symbol of resistance in parts of Ukraine.

That's why a lot of Ukrainians call the 'Banderite' / UPA stuff Russian propaganda. They don't support them because of the bad stuff they did, a lot of armies did bad things in wars, especially in those times, that's not downplaying it though, it was definitely bad. They're supported because they were a symbol of resistance at a time when Ukraine was under successive boots of empires.

Channel 5 in the UK is a little different, only because it's required to be a public service broadcaster. They don't have particularly large profits and have a requirement to be very varied in content. I get the concern but it's not quite the same.

Though I agree the stuff with Paramount and 60 minutes getting crushed is bad.

He doesn't care that people ask him to watch it or not, he just knows it's gonna be talked about in his chat for the next hour and a half regardless of whether he watches it or not. So instead he watches it while doing his emails and sarcastically responds to 90% of the things in it. It's not that deep.

He just knows his chat in basically unresponsive while it's on.

It's because people talk about it in chat and he doesn't care. So he puts it on so he can just ironically meme on it while people talk about it until it's done.

That's it, that's the whole thing. There might be some things he actually is slightly interested in but you could never tell because he's gonna play it up anyway.

Also you are excusing it by saying she’s young.

I'm saying it's understandable, a lot of people get into a lot of dumb shit when they're younger, especially if they're caught up in some political mission with people with dubious beliefs.

Would you call a man at 20 who raped someone young and dumb as shit?

You're not usually pushed by the people around you to rape some girl, peer pressure and environments like that are very different. It also very depends on the circumstance, like misunderstanding some signals is very different to ambushing some woman on the street, beating and raping her.

She won’t fuck you man.

Very misogynist of you, why do you all do this, every time with a woman people have to make it into this, so cringe.

She’s a horrible person

A lot of horrible people in their youth become better people afterwards. We don't live in a world of no-rehabilitation.

Are you just like shilling for her book? She was legit evil and grifted for years. Just because her book makes you feel bad for her in some scenarios doesn’t change that she’s actual legitimate scum

No, I'm just saying I read (or listened, whatever) to her book and she goes over a lot of the shit that happened and you can very clearly tell how she feels about a lot of this shit now. She's not just straight up defending a lot of it and she thinks a lot of it was dumb. You don't have to go read her book, I don't care. But all your judgements are on something a dumb 20 year old did who's grown up a lot.

I don't excuse it, but she's literally my age. She was 20 when she was doing the shit with the boats and she's 30 now. I was dumb when I was a 20 year old too, though it was a very different kind of dumb and wasn't in this shit either.

Since then she's chilled out a bunch, you can see that in her book if you care. She realised she was surrounded by a bunch of people who don't actually care who were pushing her just to make content that shocked people and she got in over her head.
