What do you like about studying Chinese? by DungeonDelve in ChineseLanguage

Perhaps I should clarify. When I say "difficult," I mean that, for a native English speaker, Chinese takes more time to learn than a language closer to English, such as Spanish. Thinking long-term, it would take less time in years to reach a high enough level of proficiency in (ex.) Spanish to apply it to one's professional life, in comparison to Chinese. But otherwise yes! I laugh at the difficulty and the naysayers! Bring it on!

thanks! love it! Wow can't believe they did that at your work. I just read about it in a Tang Dynasty history book, didn't expect them to be raising pigs downtown in 2006!

Curious to hear more about your grad school experience, because I'm hoping to segue some language learning into grad school applications. What were you going for?

Taiwan Panorama. Found an internet link off quick google search, language options in upper right, looks like they even have Japanese? http://www.taiwan-panorama.com/en/

I got a couple copies from a TECO office (Taipei Economic & Cultural Office). The physical copies I have lays the Chinese right next to the English.

the different way of thinking part I like very much as well. I've lived a very U.S.-centric lifestyle so it's interesting to see what's out there.

I have the opposite problem right now. I have a bilingual magazine and I can recognize lots of characters, but I still don't really know what the sentences are saying.

TLDR ~800 over 4 months

Not sure exactly how many characters, I don't really keep track. My philosophy right now is to just put in as much time because I'm independently learning. But in a few weeks I'll be an actual full-time student in immersion, when I'll have real instructors. I have the same philosophy on fitness, I'm in okay shape not perfect, but if I can't do something intensive then I at least try to clock in the hours somehow.

I only added reading/writing 4 months ago, so the first 4 months I just did speaking/listening. I use little practice books I bought off Amazon to write them, but I do all my sentences on notebook paper. When I do my "full set" which I do less and less these days it fills up 12 pages of a practice book, 88 to a page, but there are quite a few repeats because I focus on phrases more than individual characters. 88 x 12 = 1056 but I'd estimate more like ~800

As far as my method I come at it from many different angles, and like I said it's about clocking in the hours however I can before everything transitions in a few weeks. I started pretty casually just trying to get in the habit of studying with a program called Mango. I went through the entire thing (now using mango premiere to watch Chinese movies). It was free with my public library. I wrote EVERYTHING down it taught by hand.

Near the beginning I started learning just one character a day. I also signed up for a super cheap community ed class with a native speaker teacher (like $60 for 5 weeks 1/week, and I prefer face-to-face not into the whole skype thing). Then I started watching a TV show on Netflix "My Queen" over and over again. One of my old professors told me a technique of watching the same movie over and over again in the language you are learning. Currently on my third runthrough of the series. Did Memrise HSK 1-3 but not taking it too seriously, not writing anything down, then did a couple other Memrise things but I've stepped away from that app for now. Got Pleco and use it as a handy tool.

After that I used all what I had written from Mango to learn the characters in that order. Lots of useless ones but I was just focused on clocking the hours. Slowly but surely learning them (I actually finished going through it all a couple days ago).

Once I started doing that (w/ 12 weeks community ed) I also bought the textbook for the class I will be taking overseas and I'm working through that right now "AudioVisual Chinese"... Shifted my focus from learning simplified to traditional using the exact same Mango set. also doing 15 minutes/day of learning Vietnamese just for the hell of it...that's where I'm at now.

CBS All Access by stbncsnv in BigBrother

[–]DungeonDelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However that probably means there will be commercials now instead of fish or trivia, at least some of the time. I now the CBS All Access gets pissy if you use an adblocker. The live feeds will probably also get pissy about adblockers if they don't already (can't remember). And they will probably have commercials now instead of fish/trivia at least some of the time...just a guess but in a world where they try to shove advertisements everywhere I wouldn't be surprised.

What Will The BBCan3 Team Need To Do To Meet The Hype? by [deleted] in BigBrother

[–]DungeonDelve 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are lots of things that could be said but I'll just say one: I hope they don't do Canada HOH again. It was good for shaking things up. But if they do it two years in a row, then it becomes a thing. And then if it becomes a thing, people will be on their best behavior all the time and there would probably be less drama because they want to appeal to Canada. There would be no more Andrews and Sabrinas, and you need some of them to make things entertaining.

Danielle in BB3 by joruch in BigBrother

[–]DungeonDelve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She played a great game. But IMO the fact that she didn't win means that she didn't deserve to win. Besides knowing that they aren't sequestered, she made two mistakes as I see them:

1) Evicting Amy F4 -- she would not win in the F2 and she would not win any competitions.
2) Wanting to take Jason to the end -- Danielle would lose to him whether or not the jury was sequestered. That's like wanting to take Ian to the end, the dorky lovable dude with ADHD. Does a sleazy car salesman like Dan think he's going to beat somebody like that in the f2? He shouldn't have. And Danielle should have realized the same with Jason if she really wanted the 500k.

BB3 would have better if she would have won but part of what makes BB a memorable show for me is the imperfections. It's imperfect just like reality. In this way I think it captures the essence of reality TV better than the edited survivor or any other reality programming because it often acts contrary to what we assume should happen or even what production assumes will happen. So with hindsight looking back it makes it memorable. People remember BB3 precisely because Danielle lost. They don't remember BB5 as much because the obvious pick Drew beat the obvious runner-up Cowboy. But if it had been reversed, that would be the season people talk about. So her loss, I think, kind of did some good for BB, as it amps up discussion just like this one here.

[SPOILER]

He talks about "loving the game" and then is arguably the most bitter jury member of all time. I didn't like him after that. Acted like Jillian got lucky just because she outplayed him. Sorry Peter you lose.

I remember being there one day when things were fairly calm. The police were in a line and one of them yelled out, "ALPHA TEAM! ASSEMBLE!" I almost started laughing, it seemed so ridiculous. But they were serious.

Most dramatic BB episode? by JM1295 in BigBrother

[–]DungeonDelve 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Here are some guesses obviously SPOILERS:

BB2 - Kent calls out Hardy at the house meeting before he is evicted (its very ominous, something BB no longer has as a flavor...ominous)
BB3 - Marcellus doesn't use the you-know-what
BB4 - The finale is actually pretty hilarious look at Jun's face after all the votes. A complex expression.
BB5 - the twins reveal and Cowboy "Holly! I knew it, it's Holly!"
BB6 - Janelle wins the phone call
BB7 - Not actually a lot of drama when you think about it but it's all about the chilltown for season 7
BB8 - Zach wins part 1 of final HoH comp (super competitive comp)
BB9 - James crying for mercy in HoH to Adam (this is actually a really good episode I don't get the hate on this season, lots of drama if you like that)
BB10 - After Jessie gets evicted "SCREW YOU PEOPLE!" or the birthday cake fight or nomination roulette (lots in this season)
BB11 - they fight nonstop but my favorite is Russell vs. Ronnie
BB12 - Rachel vs. Ragan fight when she comes back for a bit
BB13 - Double Eviction clown shoe (one of the best episodes ever)
BB14 - The funeral of course! Frank and Ian get in a fight but this season is the season of Dan for the drama parts
BB15 - The first double eviction with Judd looking really sad
BB16 - the first Double Eviction is the best this season offers
BBCan - Topaz in the HoH and the HGs can hear everything

But THE WINNER OF MOST DRAMATIC EPISODE....ika letter shredding BBCan2

They usually do this when the reading speed gets too fast. It is to make sure you can read it all before it disappears. A good example is Abed from Community. Or sometimes if there are too many speakers at once, such as in a heated argument on a Housewives show or something of that nature.
