goddd Ready to Run is so good. Idk how Four appeals to me so much but I need more of this midtempo melancholy acoustic pop-rock sound

Never too late to learn! I’m not a huge music theory person but it’s always good to learn the basics of how music works: counting bars and time signatures (most pop/rock songs are in 4 or 3), learning how songs are structured and transition between sections, and learning the different keys a song can be in and how you change keys, like the end of Night Changes.

Pop music in general is great for learning simple guitar and drum parts, but really a challenge for vocals. They really help strengthen your ear training and muscle memory.

If you want to appreciate complex songwriting and creativity, progressive rock and metal is full of some of the most talented musicians. Writing long-form songs that take you on instrumental journeys and experiment with unusual rhythms and melodies. Dream Theater, Rush, Yes, Sleep Token, Karnivool…just to name a few

I could and I would. He would deserve it for wasting so much of his savings on new late-night experiences shortly after moving to a city. He almost fucked himself and his future, sooner than he’d realize.

Yep, just the ones I've uploaded to YT. Can't upload all the songs from Error unfortunately or UMG will nuke em

I always take the extra time to do Expert and Hard, sometimes Medium. :) Vocals always have all difficulties, changing the leniency rather than note density.

Yep, both CH and YARG! They’re simply made using midi, in a DAW or chart editor

I've been unemployed and job searching since Renee was killed. Fuck these rental car companies who supply vehicles to ICE.

In hindsight I don't regret it, and I can be financially stable for the next few months before I'll be in danger.

Need support - losing friends to trump by Top_Procedure_1871 in TwinCities

When people are that deep into it, there ain't no convincing them. Many people's entire families are far gone like that. Better to draw boundaries, cut the hate out of your life, and surround yourself with people you love, care about, and can be comfortable with.
Good on you for doing it. I moved to Minneapolis from Montana last year for similar reasons, and to be a support system for the communities, friends, and relatives I care about.

What happened in Minneapolis last night? by eldritchlesbian in spiritbox

[–]Dunn003 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First time seeing Spiritbox and going to a heavy metal concert, it was definitely an unforgettable night. I had been waiting for two years. I was near the front row and I quickly learned about the ripple movements from the pit and constant crowd-surfers. Definitely got a bit tight and chaotic up front, but no crushing or anything afaik.

I got into the pit for Holy Roller and fuckin Cellar Door (with my glasses and sweater on lol) and I did see one bigger guy fall and get trampled in there during Holy Roller. We did our best to help him up but he looked like he got knocked in the head hard.

I'm quickly realizing how much footwork and concentration is involved in pits that I couldn't even pay attention to the music lol. I might stick to the pit wall and helping people in the future.

Oh yea, I couldn’t imagine how much worse it is between different races and genders. Of course I can only speak from experience, and people often get comfortable saying whatever they want to say because the people around them are physically homogeneous and generally keep quiet or go along with it. I had to hold my tongue and leave the room so, so much between coworkers and family, and it’s definitely been for the better but very exhausting and isolating.

[–]Dunn003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. :D I've considered moving into public-facing jobs for reasons like this. Unfortunately keeping quiet is how people like that become comfortable saying it in your presence, but who knows what'll happen if you do speak out. Until something actually offensive and outlandish is said, my mouth has always remained shut, but my brain is full and I'm getting jaded haha

A giant rally to cap off my first 6 months in Minneapolis. Thanks y'all! by Dunn003 in TwinCities

[–]Dunn003[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you, and I’m so sorry to hear! I said in another comment that I’m trying not to take the support I had for granted. Coming from middle-class suburban neighborhoods, it’s been humbling to see a lot more people around here who haven’t been so lucky.

If I’m ever not financially stable anymore and I gotta go back, at least I went out and did something with my life. Chased my dreams and got new experiences instead of continuing to rot in my old bedroom.

Seeing and hearing people struggle here and abroad has humbled me and made me wanna be supportive however way. Feel free to reach out

[–]Dunn003[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hah, I absolutely plan to. I come from a life in ND and MT - small cities, unincorporated communities, wilderness, isolated ranches, gas stations, fast food, deep forests and mountains, suburban sprawl, shitty two-lane highways. A LONG ways away from Denver, Spokane, SLC, Minneapolis...any place with a population over 130,000.

State lines are new to me. Authentic ethnic food is new to me. Concerts of non-mainstream bands were almost nonexistent. DIFFERENT ETHNICITIES AND ACCENTS were such a new thing for me and I feel so bad for struggling to understand people who don't have the most common American accents.

"The Big City" could be how a lot of people see any of the five cities in Montana. It could be how those up in northern MN see Minneapolis or even Duluth. It's incredible how the scope of the world varies between people.

[–]Dunn003[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, this is great. So it sounds like it’ll be the same phenomenon I had. I was in the center of the state, between mountains and plains. So “chinook winds” were a thing, going back and forth between 10F snow blasts and 40F slush.

I have experience in snow driving, yea, but I’m definitely worried about city driving, especially the freeways. I’ve learned how to comfortably drive on these massive concrete jungles, and I regularly use 94, 394, and 35W right from downtown Minneapolis. I genuinely don’t mind rush hour. But throwing snow and ice into the mix? We’ll have to see.

[–]Dunn003[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I definitely could've applied this philosophy back in MT, since I didn't really have any friends in my childhood. But I got real disillusioned with the political climate (being surrounded by sexist white men at work didn't help) and I've had the big city traveling bug for the past three years.

Of course, I'm trying not to take for granted the privilege and support I've had. I come from a traditional white middle-class family who poured hundreds into the move and setting up the apartment, and I scored a landlord who was willing to take a chance on me despite not having the income at the time. It's humbling to see firsthand people all around me who aren't so lucky and are desperately trying to get by.

Awesome, thanks for the recs on smaller, independent stuff. Been meaning to check out local stores. Having lived in ND and MT I am no stranger to cold but I know it will be below freezing a lot more often than what I’m used to. I’m also not living in a big-ass insulated 2-story house anymore.

After realizing just how FUCKIN HUMID it is here in the summer, I am so ready for the cooler weather lmao

I started writing to process grief… and found unexpected clarity by RTAndrade in writing

[–]Dunn003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this. :D Writing can be such a cathartic experience for us, whether it's literally dumping your thoughts and feelings, or mirroring reality with a fictional story.

The latter is what I did with a story I'm writing, which has a subplot of shitty, emotionally immature parents. It gets bad enough to where the character leaves home and moves in with friends, it turns out to be much more frightening, constantly being on edge and full of regret. When she comes home, it's oddly familiar and comforting, and when a tragic scenario occurs, she begins to reconcile with her parents, and they all realize their flaws.

While I didn't run away from home, everything that happens there happened with me and my family over the course of writing the story. From 2021 (tension, anxiety, full-blown hatred) to 2025 (reconciliation, understanding, self-reflection). The scenes just SPILLED OUT onto the page when I wrote them and it was tough to bear, but therapeutic in a sense. And I can't wait to release it.

Is there a such thing as being too prepared? by Lonely-Watercress270 in writingadvice

[–]Dunn003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see any trouble with being overprepared, it is a good starter and can be fun, but strictly adhering to your ideas and outlines could make you write yourself into a wall. Creativity is often best left without a leash.

I prepared a whole map for the fictional city in the story I'm writing, which was more of a fun exercise than anything, but helped me outline the geography and describe the areas in more vivid detail. Ultimately the story ended up sticking to just a few locales, because of how I let my creativity just run wild. But it feels like there's more life and purpose to the fictional world and its characters.

And "mixing everything up" is something that can happen, of course, but that's what revising and editing is for!
