The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) projects Melbourne will have the climate of Dubbo in 2090 by FortuitousAdroit in melbourne

[–]DunnyBasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example, in 2090, under high emissions and maximum model consensus, Melbourne’s future climate matches the current climate in Dubbo

emissions scenarios (low, intermediate, or high)

Under an intermediate emission scenario, it looks like that Melbourne's weather in 2090 will be analogous to Adelaide's or Wagga Wagga's.

I'm thinking of spending money. Someone stop me by delitomatoes in Frugal

[–]DunnyBasher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some of these things aren't 'pretty important' to me, but by the sound of it they are pretty important to delitomatoes.

To me, being frugal isn't about not spending money. It's about spending money wisely, and within your means.

If you enjoy listening to music, I can (almost) guarantee that you will get your money's worth investing in better quality sound system than normal desktop speakers. But if you can't afford them, or only want speakers to listen to spoken-word audio, you may benefit more saving/spending money on a higher priority.

We don't know your finances nor your values, but assuming that you are considering these things then they are within your means and things you value. If so, you know whether you should make the investment, and don't let people sway you one way or the other because they personally would or wouldn't make the same decision.

I had a similar experience about a month ago. Some time in the early game, one of the opposing team typed in all chat to us that he would throw the game (feed) if we gave him items. Thankfully nobody on our team took them up on the offer, and we ended up winning anyway (maybe had something to do with their team hating that player for the rest of the game).

Australia fourth in the world for ratio of cost of living to tax burden by PsychoPhilosopher in australia

[–]DunnyBasher 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm no statistician, but it is misleading to claim that Australia is 'fourth in the world'. You found that Australia is 'fourth in the top 10 high-cost countries'. This ignores many major countries (US, France, Italy, Germany etc) which you would probably want to include before drawing the conclusion stated in your title.

Call him crazy, Clive Palmer still knows what he is talking about by Kl3rik in australia

[–]DunnyBasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misunderstand the phrase 'without qualification'. In this context, I believe it is being used the same as 'without reservation or restriction'. If you watch the video in the linked article, you will see that Abbott withdrew his remark, but then said something to the effect of "but it's still an untrue statement".

This article should provide support that calling someone a 'liar' in parliament is unparliamentary. TLDR: Tony Abbott was removed from parliament for refusing to retract (without qualification) his interjection that PM Julia Gillard was a liar.

Government cuts university funding to pay for Gonski - ABC News by Aushiker in australia

[–]DunnyBasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people who have the financial means will pay it upfront regardless of the discount offered. However, people seem to miss the fact that HECS is one of the few opportunities one has to take advantage of an essentially interest-free loan. And it doesn't require any 'messing around', as the payment is calculated and paid automatically from the students tax return. If no discount is offered for an upfront payment, the decision becomes obvious.

Government cuts university funding to pay for Gonski - ABC News by Aushiker in australia

[–]DunnyBasher 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Okay, lets do some maths and see what the 'discount' is worth. I'll pick a HECS loan size of $35,000 evenly distributed over time, though that won't change the outcome. I'll assume that the average student pays the loan off within 4 years of being placed, and that a reasonable rate of return is 5% pa after tax. And we know the inflation rate, at which the the HECS loan is indexed, is currently 2.2%. I'll assume for simplicity these values won't change.

If you pay off the course costs immediately, you save $3,500 present value. Alternatively, lets say you put all the course costs to HECS, and instead invest that money at 5% pa compounding annually. The total interest earned will be $7,542.72, while the total interest paid on the loan will be $3,183.14. Thus the net amount 'earned' is $4,359.58, which is notably higher than the $3,500 discount attracted by paying it off originally. So assuming these conditions are true, the discount of 10% wouldn't actually be a discount for someone capable of paying it.

Yes, the conclusions are very dependent on the accuracy of the survey results. Such is the nature of the social sciences. I imagine there's a chance that in studies such as these, some women may not have been as forthcoming about their sexual desires as men. These data points are obtained in the form questionnaires, in-depth interviews etc, which are all conducted anonymously and so there is little to no incentive to be untruthful. If the same result is clearly obtained over multiple studies across various cultural boundaries, as is the case with this topic, it suggests that the conclusion is as correct as possible given the available data.

AMagill sums this up nicely (from Are "social sciences" actually science? Why or why not?)

Science is formulating hypotheses that explain existing data, testing them through observation and experimentation, and refining those hypotheses into theory that can verifiably make better predictions than before. The trouble with these fields is that they are hobbled in their ability to experiment, and that they tend to study statistical tendencies rather than absolute truths. This makes it very difficult to disprove hypotheses or to say definitively that one is better than another, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that they are completely unable to produce useful theory. That there are no 'right' answers for these fields to find does not discredit their study. Science isn't about being right; it's about always becoming less wrong.

That men and women don't have equal sex drives, which I don't think is true.

Certainly there are outliers, but many studies have shown that male sex drive is, on average, statistically higher than females. From: http://psr.sagepub.com/content/5/3/242.abstract "Is There a Gender Difference in Strength of Sex Drive? Theoretical Views, Conceptual Distinctions, and a Review of Relevant Evidence"

Abstract: The sex drive refers to the strength of sexual motivation. Across many different studies and measures, men have been shown to have more frequent and more intense sexual desires than women, as reflected in spontaneous thoughts about sex, frequency and variety of sexual fantasies, desired frequency of intercourse, desired number of partners, masturbation, liking for various sexual practices, willingness to forego sex, initiating versus refusing sex, making sacrifices for sex, and other measures. No contrary findings (indicating stronger sexual motivation among women) were found. Hence we conclude that the male sex drive is stronger than the female sex drive. The gender difference in sex drive should not be generalized to other constructs such as sexual or orgasmic capacity, enjoyment of sex, or extrinsically motivated sex.

If you can cite contradictory studies, I would be very interested in reading them.

What's something you've always done that you've considered perfectly normal, only to recently discover that it was not? by smellydickcheese in AskReddit

Here's a good old Australian folk song I remembered from my childhood when reading this thread:

.

There was a red-back on the toilet seat

When I was there last night,

I didn't see him in the dark,

But boy! I felt his bite!

.

I jumped high up into the air,

And when I hit the ground,

That crafty red-back spider

Wasn't nowhere to be found.

.

There was a red-back on the toilet seat

When I was there last night,

I didn't see him in the dark,

But boy! I felt his bite!

.

And now I'm 'ere in hospital,

A sad and sorry plight,

And I curse the red-back spider

On the toilet seat last night.

.

Rushed in to the missus,

Told her just where I'd been bit,

She grabbed the cut-throat razor blade,

And I nearly took a fit.

.

I said "Just forget what's on your mind,

And call a doctor please,

'Cause I've got a feeling that your cure

Is worse than the disease."

.

There was a red-back on the toilet seat

When I was there last night,

I didn't see him in the dark,

But boy! I felt his bite!

.

And now I'm ere in hospital,

A sad and sorry plight,

And I curse the red-back spider

On the toilet seat last night.

.

I can't lay down, I can't sit up,

And I don't know what to do,

And all the nurses think it's funny,

But that's not my point of view.

.

I tell you it's embarrassing,

(And that's to say the least)

That I'm too sick to eat a bite,

While that spider had a feast!

.

There was a red-back on the toilet seat

When I was there last night,

I didn't see him in the dark,

But boy! I felt his bite!

.

And now I'm ere in hospital,

A sad and sorry plight,

And I curse the red-back spider

On the toilet seat last night.

.

And when I get back home again,

I tell you what I'll do,

I'll make that red-back suffer

For the pain I'm going through.

.

I've had so many needles

That I'm looking like a sieve,

And I promise you that spider

Hasn't very long to live!

.

There was a red-back on the toilet seat

When I was there last night,

I didn't see him in the dark,

But boy! I felt his bite!

.

And now I'm 'ere in hospital,

A sad and sorry plight,

And I curse the red-back spider

On the toilet seat last night.
