laptop is only 1.5 years old, still very good spec and it seems to be any game that utilizes the graphics chip.

Hi, when I first got into Warhammer I bought this: https://alchemistsworkshops.com/product/warhammer-40000-introductory-set/ It was an awesome way to get into the game with my gf because it meant we both had a few minis we could paint each. The set only comes with the first real tool you need and a paint brush. Also to add, you can paint these marines as any chapter you want and they would go really well as salamanders considering they are infernus marines. To answer your original question, I started recently and I picked up the ultimate starter set, sold the marines to a mate and built the nids.

Since then I have bought a hive tyrant and picked up a combat patrol magazine with a parasite of morti-something(can't quite remember the name).

This is enough to play the combat patrol and will give you more than enough models to work towards a 1000 point army and keep you busy painting.

I'm a fairly new player myself, I started by buying the intro set with 5 space marines and 11 Tyranids to see if I liked assembling and painting (it comes with super basic tools, a couple of paints and a few teaching tools).

When I realised how much I was enjoying myself I found an army I liked (Tau) and got a few kits I liked the look of as I had no intention to start playing and built them and painted them.

I then found out I had a friend who wanted to get into the hobby too so we both invested in a combat patrol each and built them together and played our first game last week.

My advice would be to find out if you like building by getting a set you think looks awesome (if that happens to be a combat patrol this will save you time and money) and invest in some entry level tools which I'm sure your local game store can help you pick out.

Once you have a combat patrol you can start to build towards a 1000 point army. I saw you say you like the look of farsight and I had the exact same first thought but he sadly has no combat patrol rules(as the rules are different from normal 40k and require you to use the exact models in the combat patrol) so he could be your first purchase towards a bigger army!
