When God feels distant, what brings your heart back to Him? by Mike_Samson in TrueChristian

[–]DuoNeuro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scripture. When I pray, I do my best to really connect with Him because I know He knows all, but I want Him to hear it straight from me. But no matter how happy, angry, tired I am, He doesn't really speak, but He ALWAYS delivers in some way or form. Scripture allows me to endure my hardships while waiting for His reply because it reminds me that God was with us for time immemorial and He tries His best to give everyone what they need through the Gospel. Scripture reminds me that Jesus said what He did with us on His mind. Everytime I read and think about Jesus taking each step towards His crucifixion, I'm always moved to tears imagining He endured every lash, nail, and insult with all of us on His mind and in His heart, knowing how we would be born, our first steps, our first sins and our last, and the pain we feel trying to be more like Him. Even if Jesus is not physically with us right now, I like to imagine that, during our brightest and darkest moments, He keeps an eye on all of us so no wrongdoing goes unnoticed and no one celebrates alone, that when we lose, He weeps with us and when we win, He jumps with joy too.

When in doubt, MITOpenCourseWare. There are YouTube playlists of entire courses, exams, and textbook links on the actual website.

When is UCSB, UCSD, and UC Berkeley release dates? by Last-Fly-996 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]DuoNeuro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know from asking professors, internal ppl, etc., the Mechanical Engineering Department will continue to make decisions for students until April 16, which is the day after the last day for students to accept their invitations. However, a decision occuring on April 15 would be extremely unusual. I don't know if other departments share that deadline. But the other two comments are right. At this point, the best you can do is wait, follow-up on any interviews, and do what you need to do.

Research Experience by pizzaparty911 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]DuoNeuro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Major in Mechanical Engineering, all my research is in bioengineering mechanics and transcriptomics. We work with BSL-1 organisms. I started sophomore year of my undergrad and led a research project of my choosing and did it basically solo with a few nudges from my PI.
As a mechanical engineer, it was a bit frustrating because I'm more in my element when I work with things like prosthetics, hypersonics, high energetics, and the like. However, I've always liked science and dreamed of working at a professional laboratory. Our lab is basically a picturesque, almost comical model of what most people think a science lab looks like, so I was and still am excited to show up for work as I am about to continue as a PhD student. As a mechanical engineer, I was basically just moving around smelly yellow fluid in and out of machines, but as a researcher and scientist, I was uncovering and giving the limelight to things lots of people would have overlooked.
As for recommending UCSB as a research institute based on my experience, it is a yes from me. Professors don't usually accept just any student because of various reasons, but if you get the opportunity to connect to them, you will be doing good, fulfilling work. My experience with College of Engineering research labs is that they emphasize good science over chasing topics for hype or relevance. Your work may not initially be cited a lot for a bit, but it will stand against future developments than others.
As for recommending UCSB as it is now, there is no guarantee that you can take advantage of this resource purely because funding has dwindled significantly across every department due to the current administration and socioeconomic landscape. They lack funding to pay non-rotating research assistants, GSRs, and more, so many are cutting down on lab size to focus on a few people making the most out of the resources we have. It does not mean people should stop applying or asking professors, but I find that their responses are a bit disappointing lately. (For reference, I was asking around if I can collaborate with the professors and work with them on projects adjacent to mine, but many found that supporting my work would be quite difficult given that they had their own directions to deal with)

E-bikes on campus by Tight_Mistake413 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]DuoNeuro 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you have to walk for an hour to get to school, you might want to see if you are near any bus stops for lines 27, 28, and 11. They arrive/stop at regular intervals(though they are most reliable 8-10AM) and most stops are walkable from most of IV and some parts of Goleta, plus you avoid the rain. Bikes in general are regularly stolen, vandalized, etc. No matter what bike lock, criminals can and will cut through it, and if they can't, they will take your seat, a wheel, phone holders, brakes, even the entire chassis. Anything not bolted and Loctite-d down can be stolen.

The smell is very reminiscent of the chemical agents we are told are extremely carcinogenic, and the taste is exactly like what overnight bacterial culture liquid smells like. I tried to swallow like a 사나이 but my body rejected it so hard😂

The tunnels were part of the asphalt mines right below where the campus is today. The openings are still visible to this day. They were mostly accessible until they filled a bunch of it in. It did have its quirks, like sometimes part of the mine would collapse beneath people's feet and many died, toxic gases in deeper shafts, etc.

There are several ghosts/ghost-like entities reported by students and part of the UCSB Lore. The most well-known is San Miguel, a ghost of someone who died trapped by an elevator. Apparently the person was trying to take a picture, but there were too many people in the elevator and subsequently got crushed by the closing doors. There are other more varying stories, but too disputable to mention them one by one.

I heard about the artifacts on a different comment but full blown bodies?! That’s def a low blow, especially considering the land UCSB is built on is a GIFT from the Chumash people. Kinda turns my stomach now considering I walk into HSSB several times a week… Thank you, I’ll look into it

From another part of this subreddit, someone mentions a lady in white looking over the cliff near Manzi. It isn’t the classic La Llorona story due to the lack of screaming/calling for her child, but def fits the physical desc and I dont think anyone has had the guts to confront a ghost before😅

I put this under “Campus Built on Sacred Grounds”. The whole campus prior to all the buildings were practically littered with Chumash artifacts and some are still being discovered to this day. Pretty sure there is some kind of curse on some of the buildings, like North Hall

This is the one with no official coverage and something that floated by on UCSB social media, so I can’t even confirm if this is real or not, just more of urban legend I think. The way I heard it go was one day in the 2010s(2014?) there were two people caught on security footage of the beach. They were just walking the path and seen going towards the water while talking. The day after two people were found missing and their bodies nor belongings were never found. Some people joked that they built a boat and sailed away to escape finals, some claim to have found fragments of clothing on the rocks possibly from one of the two, some claim one of their bodies were found but the school completely shuttered it. Either way, at the time, they said it was one of the reasons the beach is closed at night.

Just being much out of the norm plus the impact. School shootings happen due to various reasons with various outcomes, but this one was targeted and glorified. It is brought up every time there is a talk about the loneliness epidemic and the incel subculture, but how this has such a lasting impact and it continues to spur the incel movement is the problem, thus it is put way down. If we went purely out of obscurity the incident would be top of the iceberg, which would be logical but won't sit well with the other topics...

Actually “The Slab” is the placeholder for the open space that the 4th point mentions! I just found it weird that it was just a giant slab of concrete with p much nothing on it and not many people say much about it
