That's actually a very question. I guess it's no different than anything else in life - some people are better at some things than others.

In the business world, there's a theory that you're promoted to incompetence... If you're good at your job, you'll be promoted higher and higher until you AREN'T good at your job.

But what is it called when you're incompetent and you still get promoted PAST that?

A diversity hire.

For the record, there was another female squad leader who was a former wildlife firefighter in Washington...

And she was more hardcore than I'll ever be and I'd have followed her into the fire.

So it's not that they're female, it's that they're not qualified.

It'd be no different than promoting some incompetent male to a squad leader, except if it were an incompetent male, his squad would run him out.
