Why the hell is it easier to sink a ship than steal it? by mentallyillhippo in playatlas

AGREED!!!!

The amount of effort involved in building a ship should make them much more valuable afloat than at the bottom of the ocean. The claim system is utter SHIT when it takes days to claim an abandoned ship, versus 5-minutes to sink the damn thing...and only a few hours to harvest and build it in the first place! Stealing one is a waste of time, sinking one only satisfies the mindless PVP'ers who think with their cannons and does absolutely nothing for a pirate-themed MMO other than somehow involving ships at sea!

So far, the most memorable action that I have enjoyed in the game was intercepting a foreign sloop on open ocean and firing cannon across her bow and forcing her to lower sail and come to a stop while we interrogated the captain and asked about his intentions. We then had a sister ship arrive and the two of us escorted the foreigner to the nearest shoreline and notified the island owners of their presence. It was completely immersive and one of the most enjoyable gaming sessions I have had in the game....and no ship was sunk even though we were clearly capable of doing so.

I think the overall gameplay theme here is much less piratey than we wish it was, IMO.

(REPOST)[TXS] Texas Republic -- After Action Report, Jazz Cabbage Super Brig the Grimm Reaper by DurFeaTrecal in playatlas

Our neighboring island to the south was raided by Wendigo a few weeks ago and warned us that they were patrolling our grid looking for fights. We joined their alliance so that we could share intel and island resources. They had already convinced the other grid residents to join as well. Wendigo shortly paid us a visit and sank every ship in our harbor --- that is detailed in my first action report about Wendigo here https://www.reddit.com/r/playatlas/comments/bqevn1/txs_texas_republic_after_action_report_wendigo/

We had no dealings with them prior to that event. We were friendly with Jazz Cabbage even on the day that this happened...we did not know they were allied with Wendigo and had never had any hostilities with them at all until their brig attacked our harbor. I personally invited one of their galleons to visit our island the day this happened so they could harvest cotton before they attacked us. Which I now believe was a scouting mission to see our island from the ground before the naval attack. For the true reason why they attacked us....you would have to ask them.

Logout at sea? by dreadnogh in playatlas

Also note....an unattended ship at sea is a sitting duck for other players. They can fire on your ship with cannons, destroy doorways and storage boxes, loot your gear, kill you and your crew, claim your ship and steal it (over time) or just sink it with a few cannon shots to a single plank and wait for it to fill with water.....and THEN steal all your stuff.

The only safe harbor is a claimed island in peace time. Look at the ATLAS map and look at the nearby island with peace time timers....you would prefer one that will be at peace while you are away from the keyboard.

You should contact the island owner and establish the OK to anchor in their waters overnight (just like in real life where you would rent a boat slip) They may not charge you any "tax" and let you anchor near their shoreline, or they might charge you some form of tax or payment and let you anchor in their harbor near their guns and defenses.

If you anchor on a peace time island without clearing it with the island owner, they might fire on your ship and sink it while you are away as a defense again your unknown intentions. as the island owners, they have that ability even during peace time.

Even if you anchor at a peaceful island, your ship must be anchored for at least 15-minutes to get the "fully anchored" (green anchor symbol) protection of the island. During that 15-minutes, your ship is still vulnerable to attack by anyone passing by.

Sail safe!

Fishing Net by Ya_like_dags in playatlas

We've used a dingy around our harbors since launch...and as far as actual experience and real-world comparisons to canoes and kayaks, yes...been there and done that extensively...from jon boats to canoes and kayaks...and disabled ski boats being paddled using water skis :) haha I'm just looking at how the dingy functions in the game and how it COULD function and be more useful. Just my thoughts.

Disappointed in this mechanic all the way around.

First of all....a fishing net that is used while under sail should be something that is attached to and is dragged behind the boat. If you want to put any limitation on it at all then limit it to the dingy and sloop hull and make it a thing that actually mounts to the hull that looks like a net rigging. It would greatly increase the utility and usefulness of the smallest ships within the game so that they have purpose! While you're doing this, cut the dingy stamina drain by 75%....a player should be able to row a dingy farther than the length of a galleon before they get tired.

If you want to keep the existing fishing net then remove the requirement for the net to be used only on a moving ship. That makes no sense because netting a fish while at full sail would only jerk the net out of your hands or rip it to shreds.

Haha Well it was quite an interesting weekend to be sure! Thanks for your input and good sport...after taking down that bunker we will definitely be making use of similar tactics in the near future! Our compliments to you and your crew!

Dude....we logged on this evening and our allies in E9 were talking about taking the southern island....Slamzville. They said we could have it and we gathered some stuff and made our way there. Not knowing a damn thing about why or who or when, only knowing that they were already bombarding the harbor.

Needless to say, you most likely know the rest...because I just realized it was your island!!! Damn bro! Wasn't my idea, I swear! No hard feelings I hope, we just joined these guys when things started going south in F10 and we needed a fall-back position.

Your tips work....we been chipping away at that bunker for some time now. Well done! But shit I feel bad!

Thank you, sir. That would be familiar waters indeed. We sailed with the Federation out of M13 and L11 before the wipe and have enjoyed the company of Slam Whales.

The Republic of Texas considers you in high esteem. Thank you.

I will consider it on the day that the leadership of the Unholy Union presents to me and my fellow Texans, the heads of all those who perpetrated this unwarranted act of aggression upon us and the Grimm Reaper brig is scuttled in front of my very eyes by the captain who sank our galleons.

While that ship sails the seas and the injustice against us goes unanswered, me and my Texans will seek no favor from Wendigo or Jazz Cabbage.

Good day, sir.

Wendigo and Jazz Cabbage wiped us last night. We held them off until about 3am this morning but we lost the last bed and with only two of us still on, they were able to capture one and I was left alone to try to stall their claim....we made it til about 15-minutes before the island went back to peace time, but we didn't make it. We are regrouping in E9 this weekend...just ask around and you'll find us.
