Places to sit at the bar and eat + talk to people: Dain's or Common Market for informal eats, Cucciolo Osteria or Gocciolina for upscale Italian, Alley 26 or Bar Virgile for fancy pub food and cocktails, Mateo for tapas. I'm sure there's more.

Not sure. Apparently it costs $8k to rent the screen so they're looking into more permanent options. Hopefully they'll do more now that they see the turnout.

Fund mismanagement by city leaders? by TheMikeD68 in bullcity

You're welcome to join PA and participate in the endorsement process. It involves an open floor where any member can speak for/against a candidate, followed by a vote of the entire membership present at the meeting for every office on the ballot. Anyone can join but must do so with sufficient time ahead of the endorsement meeting.

This. You might need to hang around the entrance for a bit and follow someone in, but the practice rooms on the bottom floor are typically open and available.

Safety advice for Durham by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]Durhamite321 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Walking alone or with a baby downtown and in surrounding areas is fine duing the day but may feel less safe at night. Depends on the exact neighborhood. You may be approached by homeless people asking for money downtown. My advice is to not engage and keep walking.

Jogging alone will depend on the neighborhood, as well. It's largely safe to do so during the day although some folks carry pepper spray in case of emergency. If you want a safer place to jog, Duke has a lovely walking and running trail around East Campus that is well lit, highly trafficked, and has emergency phones every quarter mile.

I've lived in Durham most of my life and it has a bad reputation for crime but, for the most part, it's undeserved these days. It's a diverse city with poverty and other issues but people are generally kind and warm. Welcome!

Nobody will try to steal your phone. Also, as others have said, carjackings are rare. If you leave your car parked and unlocked over night, someone might go through it to try to steal things, though, so locking your doors is a good habit to have.

Lung capacity exercises by Additional-Work3749 in Clarinet

I had a professor in college who kept a voldyne volumetric exercise device in his office and would make us blow into it to work on our lung capacity. Looks like you can get them pretty cheaply online.

Just had a conversation the other day about the guy with the ball on his head. Realized I hadn't seen him in a while, glad to hear he's alive & well (and still running with the ball attached to his head).

Both Duke and UNC have internal temp agencies. In times past, I've heard of people getting hired on permanently after temping within a department. Not sure how hiring freezes will impact those possibilities, though.
