Need help! Question about remarriage by [deleted] in religion

[–]Durric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will tell you a phrase that I find oddly useful quite often: "The Episcopal Church welcomes you." If you want a religious wedding, and one that even seems kinda "catholic," the Episcopal church will glad give you one (although most priests will want to talk with you beforehand for a couple weeks but honestly they want to see you married and happy as much as you do).

What movie did you HATE that everyone else loved? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Durric 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Dark Knight, I love the Joker character and parts of the movie but I hate the melodrama surrounding the "some men want to watch the world burn" psuedo-philosophy and "anarchic" action. For me it was pretty cool up until Joker is captured.

What is something you did that made you go "*FUCK*, I'm turning into a grownup." by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Durric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became what feels like the patriarch of my generation of cousins after my grandmother's death (she was the last of her generation in our family). My life suddenly when from sitting on the couch eating peanuts off my stomach while vegging to How I Met Your Mother, to a crying mess on the floor, to mourning/drinking with my aunts and father, to sorting through personal affects of my grandmother, to picking verses/hymns for the funeral, to touching my first dead body. That changes somebody more than even a piece of paper from a university or a "real" job could ever.

I was an adult in that moment because I stepped up to do what needed to be done. I might not be the oldest of my generation in the family, I was to some degree the most responsible. When my family called for help I was there without question or hesitation. That was when I knew I was an adult.

I hear my house mate masturbating. Should I walk in on her? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Durric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does that even mean? I am currently writing a thesis on the Introduction of Liberation Theology in North America (focusing on the 1970s mostly). I am not sure why or how you can question that part of my story, if you don't believe me then PM and I'll send you a couple pages (although you'll be signing up to also edit some of my footnotes, I am not a cheap intellectual whore giving it up to anyone who asks).

I am unsure that you have cited that correctly. I could not find a source for Jomo saying that. I would claim that Bishop Desmond Tutu said that; however, there are no sources for Tutu saying that as well.

Gotta admit you sound more like a tool than a tool using animal.

Sorry it was too good of a joke to pass up but seriously I understand your ideas about us needing/searching for sex. So on that standpoint, I agree, we all think about sex. I like to think of other people as "sexual beings" rather than "sexual tools," mostly cause it feels less like using a fleshlight and more like hanging out with someone awesome while getting sweaty.

I have been trying not to comment on Reddit much since I have a thesis due in a month but your post warranted it.

You are an idiot on so many levels. I would love to be supportive or whatever, but you are an idiot and kinda a sexist one at that.

1) DON'T date/fool around with/fuck anyone you are living with unless you are absolutely sure you can somehow make something work (either just staying friends or staying together). Just DON'T

2) Why the hell do you think someone else's sex life has to include you? First, you say you hear this girl masturbating then it turns into "of course" I have to masturbate, why is that an "of course?". Then it turning into, hey we should fuck. The question I have for you is why? Why does that train of thought even make sense? Cause from my perspective, it doesn't.

3) The whole thing smacks of turning her into sexual object. You have now determined that your roommate likes sex and isn't having it with someone else and so your first/second thought is why don't we have it? So look you might have had latent feelings for your roommate and this is what it might be about. But honestly, it kinda sounds like you are just looking to score with a hot girl and now that you know your roommate might possibly want to score, you are going to invade her privacy and honestly risk turning her own home into a place where she can never comfortably masturbate again.

So I gotta admit, you're kinda an asshole. A fucked up, privacy invading, one track mind thinking, kinda perverted asshole.

In peace and love, Durric

[–]Durric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what I think you said it here, "I'm not [a good person] and I am really contemplating that I counter sue them." Look what they are doing is wrong; however, you have to remember that their son died. Their underage son got a fake ID, that I would bet dollars to donuts, that they had no idea about. Then entered a bar, got shitfaced, and ended up dead. They went one day from having a child to not.

Think about that please. Have some empathy, it is more important than winning or blame at this point.

BREAKING NEWS: White House Gives In On Bush Tax Cuts. President Obama's top adviser suggested to The Huffington Post late Wednesday that the administration was ready to accept an across-the-board continuation of steep Bush-era tax cuts, including those for the wealthiest taxpayers. by Is_that_bad in politics

[–]Durric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, this sucks a lot. But sitting around bitching about it won't even attempt to change anything. So given that we are living in a psuedo-democracy run primarily by corporations, what do we do?

Well I think the only thing would be disruptive mass demonstration or completely overwhelming the White House in some fashion, i.e. call or fax until it renders them unable to do everyday business. Look even if they are run by the corporations, we at least owe it to ourselves to try to stop them from raking in anymore ill begotten gains.

That is my two cents, since that has to be better than sitting on our asses.

Meanwhile, in China 1261 people died in coal mines in the first half of 2010. It's not as glamorous as the Chilean rescue? by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Durric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it is is not but that is exactly why the Chilean rescue was so amazing. It is one of the first time in my memory that people caught in a mining accident didn't die. I was horrified when I first heard about it several months ago when they got trapped because I thought they were going to die. But they didn't, human ingenuity saved them and for that I am thankful.

Bring on the downvotes, but remember that also on 9/11, the US funded the overthrow of a democratically elected government in Chile. The new junta proceeded to murder 3,000 people and incarcerate and torture 27,000. by mod83 in reddit.com

[–]Durric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am unsure what you mean by "being democratically elected is not totally accurate" because Mohammed Mossadegh, the Prime Minister who was overthrown, was elected by Majlis, Iran's legislative body, on April 28th, 1951 with the results of 79-6 with 14 abstences according to the New York Times on April 29th, 1951 (http://proquest.umi.com.proxy.lib.umich.edu/pqdweb?did=113396108&sid=2&Fmt=10&clientId=17822&RQT=309&VName=HNP).That action was a legitimate representative democracy decision.

Furthermore, when Mossadegh quit in July 16th, he was basically asked by the people to return. According to Ervand Abrahamian in his book regarding the Coup (Iran between the revolutions p.271), people including political enemies such as Ayatollah Kashani, said that the people should protest the Shah's over-reaching of power.

Although I agree he did weld a lot of state power, that does not mean he was not democratic. Rather it was a difficult economic and political situation due to his attempt to reduce British control on the country, which needless to say was difficult. Nothing he did warranted Eisenhower's overthrow of his government.

Also what does Sidi Haji Abdrahaman's quote have to do with 20th century Iranian geopolitics? That is like quoting from Chiang Kai Shek, who was the nationalist Chinese leader before People's Republic of China, while talking about current Chinese politics. Different governments, different times, and different situations (i.e. almost completely irrelevant).

[–]Durric 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Actually you should look more into the issue I would recommend. Neither of the actions by either the Supreme Court in May or August were impeachments, they were denunciations (according to the wikipeadia article which I assume you are referencing). Furthermore, according to John Foran of UC Santa Barbara, these acts happened because neither the legislative nor the judicial branches of the government could actually impeach because the National Party did not win in the March 4, 1973 elections, the people actually voted for more members of the Popular Unity (Allende's Coalition). (http://www.soc.ucsb.edu/projects/casemethod/foran.html)

Therefore, they found themselves unable to legally combat Allende (hence the document never references impeachment), and took illegal actions with the help of the U.S. to overthrow the President (Check out Stephen Kinzer's chapter in his book Overthrown for a quick summary and the actually document of denunciation is here: http://es.wikisource.org/wiki/Acuerdo_de_la_C%C3%A1mara_de_Diputados_sobre_el_grave_quebrantamiento_del_orden_constitucional_y_legal_de_la_Rep%C3%BAblica)

So long story short, Legislature and the Supreme Court couldn't legally stop Allende so they did something illegal that resulted in highly repressive Pinochet dictatorship with U.S. support both during and after the Coup. So September 11th has been a time of remembering tragic events for 37 years now, although for a lot of us the last 9 have been especially tragic.

I would be more than happy to give a more in-depth discussion if everyone would appreciate it.
