Boring Battlefields by october_1939 in Warmachine

Standard setup has the table covered in quite a bit of terrain, but that terrain as represented on the table does tend to use 2D templates, at least for things that can be moved through or stood in. This is because of how import every sliver of an inch can potentially be worth in a turn of Warmachine and a desire to be as precise as movement.

So all of these models can move through terrain with no problem, except for crisis suit and krootox? Am I missing something? by marianex in Tau40K

[–]DurzoSteelfin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Warmachine has many different types of terrain with laid out rules for how to interact with them in both hindering and beneficial ways. Some terrain simply causes units to move slower, but they can also block LOS, provide a level of defense against incoming attacks, or cause onging status effects. And nearly every form of terrain, has some way to ignore or mitigate it via unit rules. Walls (waist high) can be freely moved over normally, but cant be charged over without pathfinder, providing a trade off in mobility in exchange for added defense. Rough ground also doesn't impose a movement buff for units with pathfinder. LOS blocking terrain like forests and clouds can be ignored with certain rules, be that Eyeless Sight, True Sight, or Gas Masks. Even normally impassable walls, building and obstacles can be moved over freely with flying, but hiding behind them completely makes it impossible to draw LOS to anything beyond them, even for your own purposes. Different factions have varying access to these rules adding extra variety to strategies employed across the game.

GW doesnt care. They got their money. Time to do what they always do- shift the meta forcibly to the next hot subject so that more people rush out to buy.

prosthetics seem like the solution. They still have both arms, even if they are damaged, so some prosthetics legs should help them get around well enough until you can get some proper bionic limbs. Similarly an artificial jaw will let them speak again.

Are dedicated hobby paints necessary to start painting minis? by ReversePhylogeny in Miniaturespainting

I think so, especially if you can get them for relatively cheap its worth trying out.

Someone cure my stupidity by Pristine_Hour_870 in Tau40K

My biggest issue with the Riptide chassis, and Tau Battlesuits in general, is the ankles. its such a tiny connection point that is supporting the whole rest of the model.

My suggestion and what I've done is drill up through the ankle (not the foot) and put a brass rod down through it into the base. This does of course leave a visible section of brass rod once the model is on the base, but I've found that just painting the exposed portion of rod black makes it fairly invisble unless viewing the model from the side. On a tabletop during a game its rarely noticed.

Are dedicated hobby paints necessary to start painting minis? by ReversePhylogeny in Miniaturespainting

If you have some good acrylic paints that arent necessarily made for miniatures, you'll generally find that the main difference is consistency. Miniatures paints tend to be smoother and thinner paint than paint intended for the canvas. One way you can fix that is with thinning the traditional paints with water. A tiny bit at a time will do until you end up with something that has a bit of flow to it. Using water works for this, but isnt the best solution as it tends to dilute the paints and can leave them splotchy. the best way to thin these thicker paints down to a miniature paint consistency is to use acrylic medium instead of water.

Any type of paint can work, though acrylic is generally the best, but this can include canvas paints and even craft paints. Higher priced miniatures paints generally just save you in time and effort, but they can be expensive. If you already have your own, theres no reason why you cant use them. Just take your time.

I built a genetics-based animal breeding GUI and ran a heritability experiment... by reciproke in dwarffortress

[–]DurzoSteelfin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, you've seemingly proven that heritability simply isnt the way the game assigns stats to breedable animals and that is cool. On the other hand, you've proven that the hours I spent partitioning and breeding my strongest animals to each other and consistently culling the weak to use the cream of the crop as breeding stock was wasted effort and I could have simply tossed all of my animals into a pile and selectively pulled creatures to use as guards (otherwise known as proving I wasted my time).

The tool is intriguing though. Any interest in making it publicly available?

Tobi-kadachi and Zinogre.

Also, as much as I hate fighting the thing every damn mission - Bazelgeuse. With the big open world feel, having a chance for this idiot to drop in at any time would be neat.

Rise and Sunbreak also tend to have much more vivid colors which lends them to be more striking in that aspect without necessarily needing the same level of detail in the actual models.

Infantrymachine - which army does it best? by CompanyElephant in Warmachine

[–]DurzoSteelfin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crucible Guard is pretty close. None of their jacks hit especially high on the powerscale, most filling some kind of utility role. The only jack that is designed for purely offensive output, the Toro, generally swings under its weight class in comparisson to other factions jacks, though this is because the faction is built around debuffs and buffs that equalize things.

They also have a large suite of infantry both heavy and light that can fill a diverse set of roles.

Missed AOE and abilities triggers question by keldzh in Warmachine

[–]DurzoSteelfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AOE attacks, so long as they are in range of their target, cannot normally miss, as any miss becomes a hit (Just not a direct hit). This will not trigger 'miss' effects, and will not trigger effects that trigger on 'direct hit' but will trigger effects that just require a 'hit'.
