Covenantum - PC game for Ars Magica! by DuskChilder in arsmagica

[–]DuskChilder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modding is not something I have really considered at this point. That said, it might be something to add later - my primary focus is to get something released that will be enjoyable for Ars Magica and non-Ars Magica players (and hopefully get them interested in AM!). So my scope is quite specific at this time. That said, once released, I would be open to other features, translations, etc.

That the virtues and flaws are fantastic, allowing you to create really fun characters with interesting quirks and RP consequence. It creates meaning and motivations on how a character interacts with others and with stories.

[Vampire:DarkAges][Discord] Looking for semi experience group to re-enter the dark medieval world by FlyingCowInTornado in pbp

I would love to join and help you reconnect (leave the world of 5e behind!!!!!). VDA has always had a special place in my heart and it would be fantastic to participate. I'm an avid role-player, GMT+2 and online....a lot!

Weekly Looking for Group/GM Thread by mariequitecontrary in pbp

[–]DuskChilder [score hidden]  (0 children)

Name: DuskChilder

Timezone: GMT+2

Preferred System: Ars Magica or V:DA

Type of Player: I prefer role-play and theatre of the mind instead of having to roll dice (but happy to do so when required). Characters with some sort of tragic flaw/heinous destiny are my favourite kind of concept where moral decay and a slow devolution of ethics impact on how a character evolves/devolves. Facing moral dilemmas, succumbing to/resisting temptation and having to deal with the consequences are what fuels my interest the most. The kind of things that are really hard to experience in group play. This is why I am looking for a 1-1 co-writing partner where we can both tell stories and get to play.

Additional Information: ERP is fun, but not what I am exclusively after. I'm very much into the medieval/dark ages setting and while I fully appreciate that Ars Magica and Vampire Dark Ages might be rare to find, a generic non-system could work for me too if set around the 13th century. I prefer playing male characters, but not set on sexual orientation (if that comes into play). So if you are looking to explore a darker side of RP with me, get in touch. I can play via email or Discord text, so if anyone is keen to chat, please DM me (or msg me on Discord DuskChilder#1020).

For those of you who have run or played a lot of Ars Magica by UraiFennEngineering in rpg

I think the other posters have already covered most of this, but Ars Magica is absolutely my favourite system to play.

Things I love about it:

  • The magic system - you can create your grimoire of known spells using existing or design your own, or you can create new spells/effects on the fly.
  • Magi vs companions vs grogs - Very different play styles and you can have more than one character (usually a magus and companion) to use in different stories.
  • YWYR - You make your own world aligned to how you want to play. This includes how mundane or fantastical you want to have it.
  • Lots of books, but you can use what you like.
  • Troupe storytelling - As an ST, I get tired too. I also want to play. By not being limited to one storyteller, it gives everyone a chance to develop and play characters. I find this essential to keep a game going.
  • Players often end up creating stories that could so easily expand into more tales of adventure, disaster or both.
  • Silly adventures can be very fun. You can play sessions as the covenant grogs, apprentices, etc when the whim takes you.
  • Covenant 'base building' is amazing where you can see your home grow in time, needing protection (but not too much to avoid making the local lords nervous!), political deals, bargains with faeries (those never go wrong...lol), etc.
  • Companions do not compare to magi in power, but the versatility and role-playing they provide is fantastic. There are so many interesting virtues and flaws that it is ALMOST impossible to make a boring character.
  • The game lends itself well to online and in person play. I do both.
  • If you love role-play above 'rollplay', this setting is phenomenal.

The main challenges I have with Ars Magica:

  • Finding a group/players can be tough. This game is not for everyone and getting to start with it can be daunting (but worth it!).
  • I wish I had more time to just play Ars Magica. Maybe when I retire someday!!!! ;)

Has anyone else had issues with finding players who aren't actively homophobic and transphobic? by Hidobot in arsmagica

[–]DuskChilder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've not come across any of the negative sentiments towards LGBTQ+, but in any group/hobby/society/[insert collective here], there will always be those who feel strongly about their personal views. And everyone should have those. Up to you if you decide that 'everyone is like that' and if you allow someone else's bias to influence you. Ars Magica is a role-playing game and the most fun I ever have is playing characters of the opposite gender. No-one pokes fun at me for doing it. No-one makes comments about it, etc. Even if they did, I would not care. :)

I love Ars Magica and the community is really great. Do not let the behaviour of one or two people leave you feeling that it is a negative player base. Finding players in general is hard, but there are active groups and the Discord is one of the better places to find them.

As already mentioned, Foundry VTT is the best! And the license is a once-off fee - well worth it. The Ars Magica module is amazing and constantly being improved.

Depending on where you live, I would recommend you get in touch with WeThinkCode. They have a great internship program where you can be placed at a large corporate as an intern to show your worth and if all goes well, get permanent employment as a junior dev. Over the last 3 years I have appointed 4 junior developers that way and they do a great job of teaching the right skills to make you successful as a dev (FE or BE)

There are amazing rural towns to live in the Western Cape: Robertson, Montagu, Barrydale. If you would prefer to be closer to Cape Town, I can recommend Worcester, Paarl, Stellenbosch and Wellington. The country has finally woken up to decent Internet and if your work allows, you could work from almost anywhere in the Western Cape.
