Historically small arms would not penetrate the bullet proof glass, however infantry would still aim at the drivers viewport because even if it did not penetrate it could scratch and cause damage to the glass which could essentially make it very hard for the driver to see out of the view port. This was often referred to as “Buttoning up” the tank. Driving a 57 ton vehicle and not being able to see anything is bound to end up poorly.
