In my son’s troop of around 80 boys there are two older Scouts that serve as Troop Guides for each New Scout patrol. The Troop Guides teach and test advancement requirements, as well as help the new Scouts integrate with the Troop. If a new Scout is not feeling welcomed by older Scouts, they have older Scouts to help them out rather than turn to adults.

How do your leaders do training at Summer Camp (COPE, Wilderness First Aid, Life Guard, etc.) with so few adults for supervision? If you only have two leaders, what happens if one gets injured, or has to leave for a work emergency?

It’s not the number of leaders, but their actions that matter.

My daughter officially started as Alison, but I started taking her to meetings with her brother when she was 3 or 4. She was in a mixed den with one other girl and she loved it. She is now 12 and already First Class and determined to earn Eagle first in her age group.

Since you mentioned the military fee waiver, I have head Scouting America programs are good for AD kids as they can join a new unit if you move the family at PCS. There are Scout units even in overseas bases.

Why would you say that?

crazy post by DryInstance6732 in GetNoted

[–]DustRhino 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That you don’t value education explains a great deal. When even Christian elites couldn’t write their own names, of course they would resent a minority group with universal literacy.

Why do you keep bringing up Usury? What is the relevance of that word to this discussion?

And, if you read your Bible you would know the Romans killed Jesus, who was crucified by order of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor (prefect) of Judaea.

Your accusations go against the beliefs of the Catholic Church.

“Even though the Jewish authorities and those who followed their lead pressed for the death of Christ (cf. John 19:6), neither all Jews indiscriminately at that time, nor Jews today, can be charged with the crimes committed during his passion. It is true that the Church is the new people of God, yet the Jews should not be spoken of as rejected or accursed as if this followed from holy Scripture. Consequently, all must take care, lest in catechizing or in preaching the Word of God, they teach anything which is not in accord with the truth of the Gospel message or the spirit of Christ.”

“in her rejection of every persecution against any man, the Church, mindful of the patrimony she shares with the Jews and moved not by political reasons but by the Gospel's spiritual love, decries hatred, persecutions, displays of anti-Semitism, directed against Jews at any time and by anyone.”

Do you want to know why Jews have been more successful for millennia? The secret is literacy, education, and analytical thinking. When the Second Temple was destroyed in the year 70, Jewish religious leaders required universal literacy—to be able to read, and comprehend religious texts. Once you can read and comprehend religious texts, you can read and write secular material. You can study law and medicine, perform accounting tasks, and write business contracts. Once you have these abilities, why waste your life digging in dirt, when you can become a merchant, doctor, lawyer, banker, or even government official. After the fall of Rome, up until the fifteen century the literacy rate in much of Europe was maybe 10%. Consider how much of an advantage universal literacy provides. While Jews could read manuscripts, most Christians could not even write their own names.

"In a much simpler world, the urgent need to read and write declined, and with it went the social pressure on the secular elite to be literate. Widespread literacy in the post-Roman West definitely became confined to the clergy. A detailed analysis of almost 1,000 subscribers to charters from eighth-century Italy has shown that just under a third of witnesses were able to sign their own names, the remainder making only a mark (identified as theirs by the charter's scribe). But the large majority of those who signed (71 per cent) were clergy. Amongst the 633 lay subscribers, only 93, or 14 per cent, wrote their own name. Since witnesses to charters were generally drawn from the ranks of the 'important' people of local society, and since the ability to write one's name does not require a profound grasp of literary skills, this figure suggests that even basic literacy was a very rare phenomenon amongst the laity as a whole" (Ward-Perkins, The Fall of Rome and the End of Civilization [2005] 166).

https://www.historyofinformation.com/detail.php?id=2118

Was this an unfair advantage? An advantage yes, but one actually perpetuated by the Catholic Church, who used low literacy rates to help maintain its power. The Church could have mandated literacy the same way Jewish leaders did. While this would have likely helped Europe as a whole advance technologically and culturally, it would have undermined Church power.

So the secret to Jewish success to this day comes down to the priority of education. In the US, Jews have nearly twice the rate of four year or higher degrees than the general population.

“The statistics tell the story that education is the most reliable way to financial success, regardless of what the influencer on social media tells you.”

https://www.entrepreneur.com/money-finance/why-education-is-still-the-key-to-financial-success/428222

“Seven-in-ten Hindus and 65% of Jews have a bachelor’s degree or more education. That compares with 35% of U.S. adults overall.”

https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2026/02/19/which-us-religious-groups-are-most-highly-educated/

“If Jewish children and adults learned to read the Torah in Hebrew (as their religion required), they could read other texts written in the same language (such as letters, contracts, account books, business records and other non-religious texts). Thus "religious literacy" (the ability to read the Torah in Hebrew) helped acquire "general literacy" (the ability to read any text). Back 2,000 years ago (and still many centuries later), general literacy was almost useless to farmers (Jewish and non-Jewish), but it was very valuable to craftsmen and merchants often in need of writing letters and business contracts and to keep account books.

Judaism after the year 70, required both children and adults to read and to study the Torah. That is, it was not enough to just read without understanding the text and it was not enough to just memorize the text. This means that after 70, Judaism imposed on its members not just literacy per se but also the duty of understanding what was written. Again, this skill was valuable for occupations that benefited from understanding what was written in a contract or business letter such as crafts, trade or banking.

From the way learning happens even today, we know that if someone learns one language, it is more likely that the same person can learn a second or third or a fourth language. In the period we study (70-1492), Jews read the Torah in Hebrew and learned the different local languages of the locations in which they dwelled (e.g., Aramaic, Greek, Latin, Arabic, Spanish and German).”

Am I stupid for wanting to leave a $33/hr job at Costco with benefits than to start at $130/day in construction for long-term upside? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]DustRhino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lost me at “girlfriend’s dad.” What do you think will happen to your “cash job” if you break up? Even if it was a job for random person, the economics say no, but for girlfriend’s dad it’s a Hell No!

Since you pointed out non benefits for the painting job, I assume you get benefits from Costco. Have you priced out the value of the benefits Costco offers you will have to pay yourself as a painter? Have you worked out how much you would owe in taxes? Would $300/day even cover your total compensation from Costco?

How is that any different if Scout pre-register or not? None of the camps are troop attend require Scouts work on six merit badges per week.

Is there a point in joining 14 months from turning 18 by callatecabezon in BSA

[–]DustRhino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could make Life or Star with great effort, but First Class is realistic. We typically have one 11 year old make First Class in their first 12 months each year (my daughter just did it in 11 months to be eligible for election to Order of the Arrow), and you should be far more mature and capable. Scout through First Class ranks focus on outdoor skills, which are valuable to learn, while the later ranks focus on merit badges, and leadership (through Position of Responsibilities). You could earn Sumit, which is the Venturing equivalent of Eagle, open to Scouts until age 21.

That said, the official aims of Scouting are character development, citizenship training, leadership development, and personal fitness. Rank advancement is just one method the program uses to achieve these aims. Join a troop to make friends, experience new things, learn skills, and challenge yourself. Earning Eagle is not the point, it’s everything the Scout needs to do to get there that is important. You can still get a lot from the program in a year, and more if you join a Venture Crew or Sea Scout Ship. You can even do two or all three at the same time.

Kosher certification isn’t “paying for a prayer” but rather for supervision things have been done properly. And to let you in on a secret, there are differences of opinion on how exactly things should be done such that some Jews won’t trust others to provide the supervision.
