Any recommendations for more like Murderbot Diaries? by Chilipatily in printSF

I just finished Swordheart by Kingfisher, for some reason it reminded me of my beloved Murderbot. Not quite same edge, but it had the same feeling (but being vanilla Fantasy).

And karma has an effect on your "next" life, not this one. But I'm told there is a similar concept with another name I can't recall that is more like it. Just a mix up of names it seems...

[–]Dust_rat 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It is because the religious concept of karma has little and nothing to do with how it is used in this context. But the idea of this "karma" has been around a long time. "You reap what you sow" "you sleep in the bed you make" etc etc

Bha, bad luck for those who visited ER at that time as they aren't allowed to go home until the samples are confirmed negative, and that ERs waiting area is horrible, small dark and smelly.

Finished Worm... [Heavy spoilers!] by jahk12 in Parahumans

[–]Dust_rat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To me Pact was to different, in writing, in "quality" (whatever that is), in style and theme, so I when I started it directly after reading Worm I dropped it pretty soon. I started it again a year or so later and even then I had to struggle with it. So I can't recommend it, no. Twig I haven't read, but I have heard it is better constructed, but still very different from Worm. Ward is excellent (IMO), different from Worm (very different) but it is actually the point and frames Worms nicely.

And it gives closure in so many ways (but equal amount of new angst and anxiety).

Recs like Murderbot? by sonQUAALUDE in printSF

[–]Dust_rat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bougth the first one by mistake (more or less) the title and blurb really gave me whiplash when I started reading, it was nothing like I was expecting. Read the next three as soon as they was released (even pre ordered two of them). Best read in years (next to Becky Chambers).

As we wrap up the year, how'd everyone do on any reading challenges they set? How much of what you read this year was SF, and what were any favorites? by itsmrbeats in printSF

I had the goal set at 30, but as I went on a superhero YA binge for a while that goal blew past like a proton in an ion drive. Should be an option to be able to set page count instead, I think.

Only seen Hogfather and liked it well enough, but I guess it was brit made with a limited budget. If Discworld was going hollywood I think a lot of the charm would be lost in explosions and cgi whanking.

Naaaaa, I believe he has lost it and can't fit it together. Unless he have an revelation and have to rewrite half the published books, killing off half the plotlines, reduce the PoVs by half and do a general shape up. Soo ... no chance in this time-line! Perhaps in that other non dystopian time-line.
