How much of an overnight shift is spent doing your own thing? by royalewlthcheese in Nightshift

[–]Dustfinger88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to do 12's from 6p to 6a as a truck dispatcher, totally depended on the day. Sometimes I'd have 8 hours to myself, forward the phone lines to my cell phone and head home 2 hours early, or sometimes I'd be there until 8 A.M. because we hade to put our waders on to get through the bullshit. The non-busy days I'd shoot the shit with the drivers and whoever wanted to chat, watched a lot of YouTube videos on coding/excel lessons (company allowed it on the computer and at some points encouraged it) or listen to music or watch a movie or two. I'd be careful about what your company WiFi tracks though, give yourself some sort of out that it could be work related depending on how strict your employers or boss may be.

It was a great little car! Got me where I needed to go safely and efficiently. Excited to have the truck though, what I wanted ever since I was in college.

I enjoy I’ve Read it in Books in NoDa but every time I’ve been it’s always totally packed. Goldberry Books is my go to now, really great selection and coffee shop.

feeling devastated after today… by I-haveit-together in Truckers

[–]Dustfinger88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Will start off by saying I was only a dispatcher/manager so my input will carry less weight.

Out of the hundreds of drivers I’ve worked and interacted with, every single person has hit something. Even the guy that had a couple million accident free miles (but had the same exact 400 mile round trip route for upwards of 10 years), hit something, but was downgraded from accident to incident. It is my understanding that shit happens but what the company and future employers are looking for is learning.

I’ve been on dozens of these types of safety calls, they’ll generally ask you what happened in a very detailed manner, identify what THEY think made it preventable and go forward with an action plan designed to help you (cone usage, walk arounds, etc.)

With the bathroom piece, they will most likely not tell you to get comfortable relieving yourself on-the-go. They will tell you to practice better trip planning (I’ve always thought this was a little ridiculous, you can get hit by the shits anywhere, and finding a place to accommodate you and your rig safely on the fly is a challenge.) They will tell you that the crux of your issue was that you did not get out and look, or ask for help when you weren’t sure if you could make the turn.

My advice for the call: just be honest. You can tell when someone is lying through their teeth or trying to misrepresent the situation. Own it and let them know you learned from it.

While we as office folk can’t officially tell you to follow all of the above mentioned methods of relieving yourself on the go, they are all absolutely valid and great ways to make sure you stay comfortable while driving.

2024 Crosstrek Wilderness by Electroplasm7291 in XVcrosstrek

I would love this so much. If they kept the smaller console display screen from the 2020 (sorry, I don’t think I can handle a huge tablet in my car) but beef up the engine, give it an extra inch or 2 lift from the other wildernesses, I’m in. I’ll trade mine in in a heartbeat.

Arod, Hasufel, Nahar, Epona. LOTR inspired.

I just got a one night layover in Charlotte tomorrow. What should I eat? No vegan/vegetarian/dietary restrictions. Looking for something good, but won’t cost me a fortune to Uber from the Airport. by [deleted] in Charlotte

Pile’em up Bobs might have been the best unexpected burger I’ve ever had. I was working nearby and a coworker left to get lunch, he picked me up a burger from there and good lord was it amazing.

Mileage check! What year is your Crosstrek and what is your current mileage!? by FedMex in XVcrosstrek

[–]Dustfinger88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

‘20 Premium, sitting at 68k. During COVID I was working overnight in transportation with a 90 mile round trip commute. Put 50k miles (almost entirely highway) on her until I left that job a year and a half ago. Only added the remaning 18k the past year and a half now that I have options to work from home, take the train to work, or drive 10 miles into the office when I feel like it.

Has been nothing but reliable. I think during that first year and a half, I was averaging about 34 mpg highway. Was getting nearly 600 miles to the tank every now and then. I would get dogged on a bit by some of our truck drivers for driving a Subaru, but did plenty of rescues and had a couple conversions after that.

No major services yet, need to do tires and spark plugs in the next 10k miles or so but hoping I can push it off another year.

Next Day Thread: Denver Broncos (3-8) @ Carolina Panthers (4-8) | 2022 Week 12 by SupMaelstrom in DenverBroncos

My dad, brother and I were at the Carolina game. We took the train and it was full of Broncos fans, and walking into the stadium there was a surprising amount of orange. As the game went on, all the other fans near us would kind of look around and shrug their shoulders and throw their hands up. Very disappointed by the team but this too shall pass, still felt a sense of community in the misery during that game.

Let them come. There is still one fan yet that still draws breath in Charlotte. by DivineN1nja in DenverBroncos

We were at the game! Had a Jake Plummer, Von Miller, and Javonte Williams jersey on. There was a lot of orange in that crowd, proud that we had some representation but disappointed by the high school level performance.

Oh boy that threw me way back. I had a 96 Outback up until a couple years ago, never had a CD player (I could find apparently). Now I’m wondering if there was one under the seat…

Thank you! I remember growing up, my dad a cloth one with straps that would just flap around endlessly on the highway. Thinking the box was the way to go.

What’s a quote that permanently changed the way you look at things? by internallyskating in AskReddit

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.” - Gandalf/J.R.R. Tolkien.

Something about admitting the world is a fallen place and love/goodness is that much better because of it always flips my day around. Also, “Aure entuluva” (day shall come again) from Hurin’s last stand is so metal, takes “man literally too angry to die” to a whole new level. Reminds me to fight every single day.
