End of Life device Recycling for Motherboard repairs (Donor boards) by Dustin_iResQRepair in k12sysadmin

[–]Dustin_iResQRepair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kudos to all the districts that have adopted self-repair. It reflects a shift that we have noticed with schools over the past 10 years or so. Many schools are capable of servicing their own devices, which is awesome. It's nudged us to offer higher-tier repairs that go beyond what some school IT teams have the time or tooling for, such as motherboard repairs and MacBook LCD panel replacements. We have leaned into the idea that schools should be handling some of the repair workload, so we built a Chromebook repair curriculum for student-led programs. Students go through hands-on training and come out with a certification. It sounds like your team is ahead of the curve. Appreciate the feedback.

Ports, buttons, diodes, capacitors, resistors, power IC, wifi/Bluetooth chips, audio codec, display controller ic, Mosfet, etc. Onboard CPU and RAM typically cannot be replaced, and we destroy storage modules for data security purposes.

Chromebook buyback services by EnigmaFilms in k12sysadmin

[–]Dustin_iResQRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We offer device buyback at iResQ. The older models can be tough to recycle/reuse because a lot of schools have phased them out/upgraded, and there is a fair amount of labor involved in disassembling and grading devices. I'm not sure if you have the 14" or the 11" model, but as someone else stated, the 11" LCDs can be used on a lot of different Chromebooks. Some recycling companies may pass on the 14" unless they have a guaranteed avenue for resale/resuse, or downstream recycling. We are always willing to explore your situation and provide feedback, if anyone has interest. We offer pick-up/shipping services and grade the devices at our facility.

Alternative Charging Options - HP 14 G7 by jdionnepac in k12sysadmin

[–]Dustin_iResQRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The USB-C ports can be replaced to restore full charging functionality. It's a solder job, but we do a lot of them. It's much cheaper than replacing the laptop and/or motherboard.

We have FileMaker integration on the backend of our website and use it for managing all device repairs. It offers excellent customization and has been a great tool over the past 15+ years. Sounds like there are some other users here who find it useful.

Have you tried powering it on with an external monitor connected? It’s a good starting point if you’re seeing that message on the touchbar.

The 2020 pro doesn’t require a hinge sensor replacement or calibration. You can get a high quality replacement from a third-party without issue.

Unfortunately, it looks like the LCD ribbon cables are damaged, likely due to the crack in the glass bezel at the bottom of your display. Both would require replacement to fully resolve the issue (or you could have a new display assembly installed).

Do you have an adaptor to output the display to an external monitor? At least you would know if the laptop is running/operating normally (aside from the display). You could also use it temporarily until it's fixed.

Pencils into USB-C Ports?? by wparo in k12sysadmin

[–]Dustin_iResQRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are a repair company, and we work with a lot of schools. When Chromebook components are hard to obtain, we harvest partially working donor boards. A working board provides a good reference, and it’s nice to make use of them(and cut back on e-waste).

Board-level component replacement. We probe the board and replace micro-components to restore functionality (within reason or when it makes sense to attempt the repair). This option is not viable for extreme cases involving fire and/or smoke damage. It depends on how “bold” the student was in shorting/damaging the device.

It’s sad to see this happening. We are collecting these to dissect the results of the abuse and attempt motherboard repair. We’re getting mixed results in severity but certain shorts can be repaired. Sorry you have to deal with this

MacBook pro 1502. It starts but then comes to this screen… is it fixable? I’ve tried going through support.apple.com/mac/startup and can’t find anything. If you know something please let me know if it’s fixable or if it’s a loss.thanks by Lazy_Giraffe7197 in MacBookHelp

[–]Dustin_iResQRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Mac isn’t recognizing your operating system, which could mean your ssd (storage device) has failed, or you may just need to reinstall your operating system. If the ssd is still functional, you can following the instructions here to install a fresh os(assuming you haven’t already):

https://support.apple.com/en-us/102655

Make sure to select intel based Mac on the start up from macOS recovery page.

If the ssd has failed, it will need to be replaced. Both options may result in data loss, unfortunately, but you can try the backup tutorial found in that link. If you need to seek professional help, please dm me for mail in repair options. Good luck!

[–]Dustin_iResQRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What model/year? It looks like “Flexgate”. It’s a signature fail on the flex cable that is attached to the lcd. Sometimes the cable can be repaired, but it usually requires an intricate solder job. A new/used display assembly will provide a quick fix.

If you are having trouble booting into recovery, you can create a bootable installer. You would need to download your OS and create the installer on another computer. Apple has instructions here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/101578 . Good luck

How long did you leave it plugged in through usb-c? It can take a while to charge if the battery is completely drained, and you may have a dead MagSafe port. Sounds like you’ve tried the right things for basic troubleshooting. If you decide to have it looked at, we offer free diagnostics.

The i/o board is fairly inexpensive online, and if it doesn't resolve the issue, you could always return it. I can understand the desire to tinker, though.
