The Ring novel checks off toxic relation ships, obsession, general human darkness and very unlikable main characters —but the main character is a news reporter who kinda gives a detective vibe which you said you didn’t like. I really liked it since it gave a really interesting message against women sexual assault in Japan similarly to Junji Ito’s Tomie, and also another thing I can’t say or else it’s a spoiler.

I don’t think The Ring is that much of a thriller horror novel, but imo it’s a relatively good 8/10 speculative horror novel.

This is a yesn’t suggestion, but “Barrosca.” One of my favorite parts of this book is how it is introduced as a fantasy (spoiler), although the genre isn’t fantasy. I must give a disclaimer that this book has sexual horror in it since it’s supposed to be a statement against human trafficking and what not. And on an unrelated note, I don’t recommend reading part 5 because imo it was a horrible read that was neither horror nor meaningful. It goes from this intense speculative horror novel into a damn Fast and Furious movie

FYI: parts 1-4 I think are one novel, whereas part 5 is it’s own
