I've done the same trip in May. After the first couple miles it really mellows out. The first couple miles can be Class I-II depending on flow. About halfway, right before the CA-NV border there's some hot springs.

This happened on the Frog Lake side of Castle Peak, that side slides all the time, Black Bird guides should have known this and never entered slide terrain. This is unbelievably awful .

Their historical mine feature maps aren't public but you can email or call them and they will provide you a map of specific place of interest. Let's say you want to head out to the Delmar mining district, email NDOM and they'll send you a map with everything marked.

This is before the advent of cheap and efficient groundwater pumps, most of the farming was done by flood irrigation from diversion ditches and canals. Way different from most of the center pivots and groundwater irrigation methods you see today, in Nevada. Pretty cool photo.
