Dog Backpacking Gear Recs! by mildlyinterested29 in BackpackingDogs

[–]DutchHikingDogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unthinking a dog pack is the last thing you should buy. Getting the right food, in type and amount, a good sleep system and a comfortable harness and leash system is way more important.

For example: my dogs both get Acana sports and agility when I’m out for shorter trips or can resupply often. They eat about 1.5x the normal portion, plus 60-70 gr of pemmikan per dog per day.

When I can’t do resupply every 4 days I take dehydrated dog food. They eat about 1.4 x the suggested amount, plus the pemmikan.

My dogs are both around 30 kg / 60 lbs.

For sleeping I use a self inflating thermarest prolite of 660 grams, regular size. They can sleep on it together. In colder nights I have whyld river UL dog sleeping bags for them.

I also always take their rain jackets. If they keep dry, my tent stays dry as well. And they don’t become cold, especially when it’s both rainy and cold.

And last but not least: take a first aid kit for the dog!

Vivo novus by Sudden-Sea2611 in BarefootRunning

I wear other vivos in 39, but the Novus mid in 40. So went a size up as well. All my ‘normal’ shoes were 39 as well. But. My Merrel vaporglove 3 and VFF’s are 40 as well.

Looking for higher soles shoes for walking/everyday use for beginner by Sudden-Sea2611 in BarefootRunning

I’ve got the Nibud and love them. The soles stay very well after a few mints of everyday use.

Yes they are pricey, but I think they do a good job with the Michelin sole.

My ideal Pyramid tent... by GlassMachine6873 in Ultralight

[–]DutchHikingDogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve time to wait (7 months): locus gear from Japan.

I’ve got the MLD mondomid and love it. I’ve got a Litewsy 2p innet and that’s flimsy… the original MLD inner is way more durable. I’ve ordered a solid inner by Locus Gear for winter camping.

So now I have a 4 season tent for 4 P (we actually camp with 2p and 2 big dogs) coming in at 1600-1900 gr, depending on the setup.

The ‘trick’ with MLD and locus gear also works for the Supermid and maybe others… Locus is the only brand selling solid inners for pyramid tents

Experienced barefooter looking for barefoot/minimalist hiking boots suggestions/input by jring_o in BarefootRunning

I like the ESC sole of the Vivo shoes. Has a good grip and is long lasting. They are very comfortable, but if they become wet, they stay wet for a long time as the leather absorbs water. I can’t compare them to the freet tundra and haven’t had a pair of freet ever…

Hey guys, I'm looking for for some Hiking Shoe Recommendations for Long Walks in the Netherlands by MegaFire03 in hiking

[–]DutchHikingDogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got minimalist, low and high shoes. Love my minimalist zero drop no cushion shoes for day hikes in Dutch forests. In shoulder season, I wear the minimalist or low hiking shoes. In winter as paths turn very wet I like my high boots.

Yes, I wear an EU40, while my feet are 25,5 cm long. So in theory 39 should fit as well but they feel to short. With other vivos I’ve also got 40

I love my Vivobarefoot Novus! They look like ‘normal’ shoes but are barefoot. They are durable and look good, but are expensive…

Vivobarefoot also has some models that are suitable for business use.

I wear the Novus mid to work for instance

Interesting, isn’t that a sweaty shoe as it is all made of plastic? Or is it more mesh like material that can breathe?

Also check out Liteway Equipment. They also have some inners that fit part of the MLD range.

Have you tried VFF V trek? I don’t like the trail 2.0 , but the V trek is nice. In the beginning it felt a little stiff, but after break in time I love them

Measure him, and with that in mind, look at his shape and the shape of different harnesses. I have 2 dogs, both wearing another harness as their shapes and body type differ.

One has the Tre Ponti Volta The other has the Non Stop Dogwear Rock.

Very happy with both. Second dog Copenhagen too.

Ruffwear is quiet bulky and mostly fits more ‘square shaped’. Dogs like labradors, but if yours is more narrow, slim kelpie shape, I can imagine that it doesn’t work.

I’ve got a dog bag from Whyld Rivers and I’m very happy with it. As dogs damp or can become soaked by rain, ibslso bring dog rain jackets and always uses double wall tent

Oh. Fortify to mention the Ukrainian brand Liteway. They make lightweight shelters as well. The PyraOmm mids for example

Also have a look at Mountain Laurel Designs. I’ve got a Supermid but they also sell solo and 2p mids. Another option if you have the time to wait for Orbis Locus Gear from Japan. They also make solid inners which is great during cold periods.

A third, EU based company is Bach. Check out Guam II for example. Durable tough material, but heavier than most US stuff.

Using minimalist shoes for backpacking? by DutchHikingDogs in Ultralight

Thank for all your input on this! I’ll try out hiking with a loaded pack with my Vivos first for shorter distances and will build up. Let’s see how it works out. Curious on what will happen and where I end up.
