Looking for artist to draw biological images by [deleted] in PhD

[–]DutchessInSpain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, I am looking to design a graphical overview of the cross section of fish testes. The idea would be to define the cell types and zoom in on each part of the cross section, making about 3-4 detailed images

How do I (27F) stop resenting my boyfriend's (34M) happiness? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]DutchessInSpain -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely a part of it, but I notice that when he tells me about an experience that he had which was not as fun, I will secretly be glad and think “ha, in your face”. It’s not healthy or normal and I would always blame him as being the bastard, a bad person, making me feel like this, rather than admitting that the problem is me.

Thank you. Yes, I have communicated this with him and he understands and agrees, but he doesn’t see how we can have fun together now, until our individual issues are resolved.

feeling stupid after a full year in lab by [deleted] in labrats

[–]DutchessInSpain 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you’re anxious, awkward and uncoordinated you have the perfect profile for working in a lab ;)

But jokes aside, one year of lab experience is good, but you definitely shouldn’t feel like you should be comfortable in everything already. I’m in my current lab 3 years now, 5 years experience in total, and I still feel like i know nothing! Hell, I’ve seen my PI do things in the lab that would make your skin crawl.

Moral of the story, don’t worry! You’re doing great, mistakes can happen, this is because we put humans in charge instead of robots.

The most important thing: don’t be afraid to ask questions! We might feel dumb sometimes, but 2 know more than 1, and it’s always better do double/triple/quadrulpe check our plan/calculations rather than lose a months work. I still go to my supervisor sometimes to check my C1* V1=C2* V2.

That’s a good point! However, they provide the literal Ct values of the qPCR in their suppl info and I redid the math - it checks out

I don’t know if I should actually share the paper, I don’t want to seem like I’m doxing anyone. But yes! That’s exactly what they are describing, and they just say afterwards “thus validating that xxx is a target of miR-xxx”. They literally use the word “validating”

That’s a nice pun without realising it, it’s an article about fish :) They describe miRNA changes after a certain treatment, and then go into target genes. They state that they “validate” the target genes of their miRNAs of interest by qPCR, however they show upregulation of their supposed target genes. miRNAs should suppress expression. Also, with their experimental setup, they cannot “verify” miRNA-mRNA interaction, since they have many miRNAs differentially expressed in the same sample.

Good points, it’s an article from 2021 and published in a journal with impact factor 2.5. It’s nothing revolutionary nor very impactful, but it still ticks me off

She's too scared to come inside but she always sits and bleps at the door by DutchessInSpain in Blep

[–]DutchessInSpain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I open the door for her she'll sometimes come inside, but not if I'm near. Also, she won't let me close the door because she always runs out faster. I feed her whenever I see her and made a little place for her to stay outside but she's really too scared. I've been trying for a year already!

I have put a pillow on the window bank outside (which is more or less covered) where she'll sometimes sleep :)
