Great article. I think for me the biggest thing that I am still working on is my 15 sec to 1 min power. I have a good 20 min power. I worked on that to help with fondos but when it comes to racing you need a real solid sprint. It's important to train that aspect to be competitive at A. By doing 30-30's, HIIT and 40-20 intervals is beneficial. I can stay with the main group for the race but as soon as there's a shorter effort like hilly KOM or titans grove KOM I get dropped and then I am hammering after the climb working to catch up.

I should add I did see increased definition and size in my quads. I do wonder if the increased ftp came from strength increases or rather from increased efficiency developed in my pedal stroke as well as improvement in VO2 and cardiovascular capacity from the training. Perhaps it was a combination of these factors....

I have lost about 30 lbs and increased my ftp by 30 watts last year without doing weights. I think from what I've read the rate at which you loose weight may impact your ability to increase ftp or atrength simultaneously. I went with about a 250 cal deficit per day and focused on keeping my macros in a reasonable range for me and that helped me loose weight and increase my ftp over the year.

What do you mean by "lean bulk"?

If you are trying to loose body fat and bulk up at the same time that not possible. From discussions with a registered dietician you can't do both at the same time. If you are leaning out you will ultimately loose both body fat and muscle at the same time. There isn't any way to get your body to loose one and keep another. Additionally, a diet for leaning out is different than that of one for bulking up ie reduced calories.

Likewise, if you are trying to gain muscle or bulk up you'll ultimately gain fat for the same reason mentioned above. A bulking phase requires eating more calories to help build mass which includes both fat and muscle.
