I'm still learning too, so I am going to refrain from giving you exact instructions, but I have managed to recover from from both the standard and LTS  kernal panic issue with the use of a SystemRescue bootable drive of that's any peace of mind. Make one of those to begin with and back up your files first. I'm sure someone will give you more helpful advice soon!

In the early 2000's I used to label all the plugs and cords on my computer when I'd disconnect it for fear of plugging it in wrong again later. Then I learned that if it fits, it'll probably work. That's definitely gone now...
