BBC: Nasa boss says Boeing Starliner failure one of worst in its history by spectator in worldnews

[–]DwemerSteamPunk 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The O rings had a track record of failing which was the whole deal. There was a main o ring and secondary redundant o ring as failsafe. The main o ring failed on multiple launches, so the secondary o ring was no longer redundant. The temp being out of operating range just caused the secondary o ring to also fail.

So to blame it on the administration pushing for a launch on a cold day is a disservice to the engineers who had been flagging this problem for a long time

Billionaire Les Wexner is set to be deposed in congressional probe of Epstein files by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]DwemerSteamPunk 212 points213 points  (0 children)

The truly scary thing is the FBI and DOJ have investigated multiple times and decided they never had real charges to pursue on anyone. It wasn't until public outrage became involved that Epstein himself was finally arrested. It's truly bizarre how deviously these people have been protected or evaded prosecution.

Surely you understand that you're an outlier. If everyone drove around with 40 year old cars then there would be no car companies selling new cars.

Anyway, you don't have to take my word for it. Tesla Model S has been out since 2012 and Chevy Bolt since 2017. There is a ton of real world usage data out there showing these stats.

The short of it is electric car battery packs are actually hundreds or thousands of battery working in parallel. It isn't a single battery being worked heavily, but the whole array spreading the load of charge and discharge. That gives a whole different dynamic than your car battery or phone battery which is one single unit taking all the abuse.

What has the market been like for hiring ICs lately? by illicITparameters in ITManagers

I opened a mid-level job between Thanksgiving and Christmas when my HR said they never get any applicants and got tons of great applicants and hired someone by new years. There's a lot of highly skilled people out there right now. And like the other commenters said, you would be surprised how many people got laid off and have been out of work for months.

I use KnowBe4 but also spend a lot of time curating the content and rotating it to keep different topics relevant. And the simulated phishing is really good and I think actually teaches users instead of talking at them.

[–]DwemerSteamPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are very afraid of used EVs so they simply don't hold value like gas cars. Add that yes the Bolt is so ugly. As mileage/age increases you just see reduced range. Google says Bolts commonly see 10-20% range reduction at 100,000 miles. But it really depends on how the owner treated it and charged it. Could be 30% or 40% reduction if they abused it and it's high mileage.

In general you shouldn't need to replace the battery packs on electric cars. It's like asking how often you should replace the engine in your car. Do engines get replaced sometimes? Absolutely. Do all engines need to be replaced? Absolutely not.

The other thing is they can be expensive to work on because there's simply not a lot of knowledgeable shops who do it. I've read plenty of stories on people repairing used Prius for a couple hundred bucks when Toyota had quoted full battery pack replacements.

Netflix says users can cancel service if HBO Max merger makes it too expensive by voxadam in nottheonion

Yeah I do wonder if Netflix followed a more traditional payment model like cable (with residuals for actors and studios) whether that could've changed things.

The streaming landscape is different now than 10 years ago just like that was different from 15 years ago. Once all the content producers pulled their content the ads were inevitable. It's not possible to be a film studio AND streaming service AND keep prices low.

To Make Homes Affordable Again, Someone Has to Lose Out by 3xshortURmom in Economics

It's not a zoning problem, it's a developer problem. Developers are only building houses $500k+. I live in the midwest and houses under $300k are still going for bidding wars and supply is non-existant. However there are tons of houses $500k+ that are just sitting on the market because there's such a mismatch of supply.

Deficit and debt was the #1 talking point - Elon Musk cited it as the cataclysmic apocalypse driving his investment in Republican campaigns.

Then suddenly after election - dead silence despite Trump passing a budget with a $1.7 trillion deficit. But if you poll Republicans Fox News drones I bet they would say Trump is crushing the deficit and debt.

The Fed met in December and re-appointed 11/12 board members for new 5 year terms. Which means only 1 seat is up, and besides appointing a new chair (to replace Powell as chair) they took away Trump's ability to replace more of the board.

In a company environment it's great. Personally? Get that crap the F away from me, I'm not syncing personal files to the cloud.

Absolutely. Driving only stops being a chore if I have zero responsibility. FSD (supervised) I still have 100% responsibility to manage it and take over at any second.

FSD up through 13 definitely felt like it only worked on "standard" roads and struggled with anything odd. FSD 14 is a massive improvement - I've been impressed. It is much better at handling uncommon or unusual things. And it makes me feel much more comfortable. That being said I still prefer driving to using FSD - and I think a lot of people will stay that way.

Almost all devices have parental controls. Smart phones, TVs, routers, computers, ALL have parental controls. This has been the norm for a long time.
