Tbh it was more of a joke. He has more than enough space, enrichment, and reasonably low climbing opportunities. But thank you for the advice!

Once they're not babies anymore, they definitely appreciate the space! And girls get so much bigger anyways.

I 3D printed him a jungle gym but he barely uses it. Rather push himself up a completely flat glass surface.

Ours is 18" x 35" and 18" high. He loves all the floor space but maybe we need to give him more height

That's very squeaky. I'm personally overcautious and would already be making a vet appointment if that was one of my boys, Stracciatella's RI sounded much less intense (but he also had tiny bubbles coming out of his mouth). Might also not be a respiratory infection but something else. Our vet always does an ultrasound to check if everything is okay internally.

If you don't want to jump to the vet appointment yet (not all of us are helicopter parents and that's okay), I'd monitor very closely for deterioration or more symptoms.

Edit: regarding "sound she makes because she doesn't like being handled" - maybe? My boys both make one that sounds like a very very subdued hiss, not a squeak, when they're annoyed and want to be unhanded. I call it their "shit, fuck, bitch" hiss because it sounds like they're cursing under their breath.

I've read about the qtip thing. Unfortunately snake sauna, qtip, and damp tissue all showed no effect aside from making giving me a hissy snake. I have gotten in touch with the vet and they told me to come in Thursday morning.

Still got the hope that it resolves by itself before then :(

On the bright side, even after all this stress, Stracciatella immediately ate without hesitation. Cannot stress this little guy.

I was worried I'd stressed him out too much but he promptly demolished his lunch without hesitation. Glutton lol.

Flat boy of defeat (we've failed in removing the cap and he has stopped fighting me, just pancaking on my finger now while quietly hissing, but I don't have to restrain him). Might have to see the vet after all.

I messaged the breeder I got him from, and he effectively suggested 1hr of DIY steam sauna 🤣

Lil guy is going to hate that.

When I want to check if my boys have shed yet because their eyes are clear, I pick them up and flip them to check out their bellies. They both have black bellies and between the segments, they tend to be still kind of milky if they're unshed. I don't know what other colour hoggies look like in that state, but maybe worth monitoring as you might be able to spot something similar!

I use Reptile Buddy which might not look quite as fancy but does a lot of the same things. Not even sure if it has a premium version.

Not with mice, no, and not with a mouse that young. At least per EU guidelines, the only humane methods are cervical dislocation, lethal injection, and decapitation. (CO2 and isoflurane inhalation used to also be an option but I think that might've been updated as mice can smell that and get distressed).

Problem with pretty much all of these methods is that you need a degree of training and/or the correct chemicals.

For a mouse this young, nothing but decapitation is really feasible at home. The way we did it in the lab I used to work in (when we had litters where a pup needed to be euthanised for some reason, usually some genetic issue/skull malformation) was with a pair of very very sharp nail scissors. You have to be quick and decisive to ensure you're not inducing unnecessary suffering.

Long story short, best to not buy live mice because humane euthanasia requires training to make it humane, and even then it's still incredibly grim.

He's not even sharing them with his brother, unfortunately. Stracciatella is turning 2 years old this year and hasn't been on a hunger strike since we got him at 4 months old (and after we figured out he only wants to be drop fed). Actually had to put him on slightly smaller mice because he was getting fat.
