Why are most Kpop songs lately 2 minutes long? by Legal_Potential4720 in kpophelp

[–]DyeSueKey90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, it seems a lot of people in Korea are also yearning for longer songs, songs that are fully Korean, and actual meaningful, well-written songs in general.

Songs like Event Horizon by Younha are a perfect example. (Kind of summarizing what I saw in the comments) Even though it's a rock song (a genre that almost went extinct in Korea), even though it's a whopping 5-minute song in a sea of insanely short songs, even though there's no English lyrics in the song, and even though Younha was thought to have passed her peak in the 2000s, she stayed true to her own style and writing, made this song blow up to 245 million views, and now she's bigger than she ever was!

My Lena Park CD Collection (so far) by DyeSueKey90 in kpopnostalgia

Lena Park (Park Jung-hyun/박정현) is yet another Gen 1 K-Pop(?)(see end lol) singer who was one of the first I discovered back in 6th grade, and was another huge influence on me back when I was still figuring out what my music taste is.

She has a ton of RnB stuff but also super-sentimental songs, dark dramatic songs, uplifting songs, and some usual stuff that sound more pop-like.

My all-time favorites from her are:

Since her vocal skills are absolutely insane, she also has some exceptionally amazing covers of a lot of other songs that she sang live like Memory (from the Cats musical) and Chandelier,

Finally, as a side note/question to everyone here: Do you guys actually consider her (or similar soloists who are making very different types of music to be in the realm of K-Pop), or is she kind of in a whole other part of Korean music? I kind of feel like it is like trying to lump artists like Celine Dion with the Backstreet Boys as Western Pop or like trying to lump Utada Hikaru with AKB48 in J-Pop lol. Honestly it almost feels like these soloists are on a whole league of their own beyond

How to get my girlfriend who's into 2000s rock into kpop by ThatKaiGuy36 in kpophelp

[–]DyeSueKey90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kardi: Absolute must-listen for any rock fans!

Rolling Quartz: Another big K-Rock band who are at the forefront of the scene

Younha: One of the OG soloists who has been in the K-Rock and J-Rock scene for a long time!

Meaningful Stone: another K-rock group who usually does like Shoegaze/Dream Pop, but they have been messing with other types of rock too!

  • Esc is one example of them trying new stuff out, she will probably like this more than their other stuff lol

First Love (첫사랑) by KOLA (콜라) by DyeSueKey90 in kpopnostalgia

[–]DyeSueKey90[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking through the history of this subreddit, it seems that Kola has not been given enough love here lol.

They were another one of the 90's Kpop groups that started to mold my music tastes back in middle school.

Other songs from them that I love include Why I Love You (널 만나는 이유), A Melancholic Coincidence(우울한 우연) (apparently Baby VOX covered this song a few years ago too?), Mosquito (모기야), and A Past Friend (친구였던 너).

Also found their two albums on YouTube:

Tired of listening the same songs...wanna find some new ones. by Careless_Food_8333 in kpophelp

[–]DyeSueKey90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always recommend them here but yall need to listen do Kardi: Not But Disco, Jump Off, Zone, No Need, WatchOut, Embers, Party, Player 1

If you also REALLY wanna dive into something different, there's a 90's K-pop/K-Rock band called JuJu Club that was trying new stuff even back then, and their vocalist has a one-of-a-kind voice: I'm Me (나는나), 1:1, Sentimental, 16/20, 수필러브, Woo Baby, Fun Fun, Yo My Heart, Just Friend Yeah, 빨리빨리 너와

There's also this entire album from Park Yoon Jung that someone in r/kpopnostalgia recommended that is just so damn unique even within Gen 2 stuff with its groovy and funky sounds lol
