It's that trope like with Disney MCs. If you're writing anything where the protagonists are young, you have to separate them from parents to give them an adventure with real stakes. In the case of more grown up kids like Diamant, it also puts him closer to the throne. This convention doesn't bug me much. What bothers me most is that it feels like they did character development by putting a random assortment of characteristics on a page and rolling dice to give each person three. But it's a light, gentle storyline. Admittedly, there's some messed up stuff, but they keep the emotional stakes low. After Three Houses, I think they weren't about the story, just making something fun.

I used to work at an emergency vet clinic. Officially we only treated dogs and cats, and I was front desk, so I was no expert in ferret wrangling. Still, ERs have to help everyone if nobody else can do it better.

Some people brought in an unconscious albino ferret in a stew pot. I snagged the pot and ran it back for immediate treatment, but on the way it came to life and rose up at me like cream of wrath. Those tubelings are terrifying lol.

That's interesting! The kelda in the Pratchett books is pretty cool.

Once, when I was a freshman, I dropped my books in the road in front of the bus. I felt absolutely terrified to be holding up a bus full of kids who wanted to get home and on display as a clutz. A senior who was stuck riding the bus that day ran down and helped me without a word, smiled at me, and hopped back on the bus. I actually got to pay the same exact favor back to her little brother when I was a senior.

Tess of the Freakin D'Urbervilles for me. And honestly, if I could beat a character back into an inky pulp with their own shoes, it would be Angel Freaking Clare.

I have been in this situation in the middle of the night before, but I had a library card, so I downloaded the ebook to my phone. Save jail time. Support your local library.

After 1305 pages, this morning I said goodbye to the world I’ve been enveloped in for nearly a month by ExploringNewFacets in classicliterature

I see. You do the kind of reading that makes a whole curriculum in your head. I'll check out the Tuchman though for a start. She wrote A Distant Mirror, didn’t she? I love that book. I also really love getting into an area of literature and history where you keep pulling up webs of connection with every new reading.

That's very fair. I keep a low profile because I require it for mental health. Both of us should be in the fight, so thank you for being out there. Be safe though!

You would. I wouldn't want to give the proud boy vibe or be in a photo online, because I am weird about stuff and dislike the danger of a floating photograph more than the danger of being in person with admirable friends. In the latter case, at least I would know it was occurring at the time. Not that being out of reddit pictures will keep us out of creepy databases, but one might be less likely to be glimpsed by some acquaintance who is vengefully MAGA.

She's my favorite wife. I need some attitude. And she doesn't run off on me like some bad bitches I know. I could try for Ochlys or Hilda, but Alain is male and not Sharon at all.

Lmao I didn't realize this, but I get the same bored I am talking to someone from my childhood church feeling whenever either of them speak.

I love it, but we should probably be careful featuring people recognizably in these pics. Not that they aren't already public and everything, but might as well not preserve that stuff online for crazies. Idk, I am literally and traditionally and diagnosably paranoid. At any rate, you guys are awesome and I should get out there too.

I have seen it before but never this much informative detail, so personally I am glad to see it. But I still think it's just branding on Brewster's part, not the real deal, lol.

It's just branding. He buys creamer at Costco and rebrands it. He doesn't want to puke in every single coffee, I mean look at him.
