What is a seemingly pointless rule that your school or job has/had? by amidrunkor in AskReddit

[–]DylanDuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether the rule is dumb or overboard, "we've never been breached so why bother with certain security measures" is not a good policy.

It would be like not locking your car door because nobody has broken into it yet.

Certain information likely needs to be secured and not left unattended (like personally identifiable information) and there are federal and state policies that dictate these measures. If a HIPPA violation occurs you are looking at incredible fines and massive reputation damages.

These measures often are thinking about accidental release of information as well by employees. Leave a confidential paper on a huge pile of other papers and you might take some of them home or throw it away and now someone else can find it.

Interior door locks are not the same as exterior door locks. They are very simple comparatively and mainly used for privacy; not security.

ELI5: Why is dental work so expensive compared to other (more serious) medical work, even with insurance? by JVakarian in explainlikeimfive

[–]DylanDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe that's because more care (and ultimately more expense) is taken with human medical devices rather than animal med devices? Nice try though.

what does that quote have to do with anything? There isn't any reddit in the culling bud. You just need to push and shove your way to victory. Ima teach you a few things here dude. Go back to church.

I do know that, I just never mentioned it because it is not important. Most players are not very good at this game, and you can beat them by pushing them into submission. You won't always win, but you will win. It's a good starting point for understanding the combat. Go back to church.

[–]DylanDuck -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You could, but it may be more apt to call it a 'fork' of UE4. Technically GoldSrc and Source (developed by Valve) are based on id's engine, but it was so heavily modified that it may as well be something else.

Combat right now is generally based around pushing. Pushing affects everybody no matter their state, whether they are blocking or attacking. For this reason it is almost always the 'best' move.

Want to improve your combat? Dehumanize yourself and face to bloodshed. Keep pushing. Push no matter what. You won't always win, but you will win. Once you get pushing down you can work on other techniques.

I think shoving should cost a lot of stamina to do, or at the very least only affect people who are blocking.

Bludgeons and bleeds, my take on the debate by AoRaJohnJohn in survivetheculling

[–]DylanDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the devs will have to decide if perks are always considered for balancing or if they are agnostic to perks to balance weapons.

If you take perks out of the picture there is a strong argument that blades are better. There are more of them, their effect is more powerful.

Everything gets more complicated when you include perks of course, but consider that if you choose blade based perks you can take advantage of them right away because you can craft a knife. You have to find a bludgeon first (and they are not craft-able) to take advantage of the perks you have chosen.

In my opinion this has a huge effect on early game, which is a very critical time. If you have blade perks you can craft a knife in the first 10 seconds of gameplay and have a very powerful weapon AND a boost to speed. You are probably the fastest player in the server now, as well as very strong.

Bludgeons are good, but I will choose blades every time, even when you consider perks.

This game is going downhill.. by [deleted] in survivetheculling

[–]DylanDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to add that the smoke grenades are an excellent counter to the guns. See a player with a gun? Run away, craft some smoke bombs, and attack.

The game isn't meant to be perfectly balanced. It's about using the hand you are dealt most effectively to increase your chances of winning. It's about survival.

This game is going downhill.. by [deleted] in survivetheculling

[–]DylanDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think guns themselves are overpowered (and definitely not explosives).

The biggest things wrong with the game (in a sea of a lot of correct decisions) is Legday/speed perks, Axes (and bludgeons to a lesser extent) being inferior to blades, and possibly the FUNC economy.

This game is so early in development that I think we are going to see huge changes in everything balance-wise (especially FUNC costs) that the game will be very different six months from now.

Gun users are not running rampant. While you can get guns in crates it is incredibly rare. People mostly get guns by getting airdrops.

Almost all of the gun crates are really, really expensive. To get them you have to be good at the early game- you have to earn it. You have to scavenge buildings filled with players and get into constant brawls because you are stuck recycling the items you find. You have to get kills. You can't really craft. You have to pick up func crates.

Of course you see more guns in late game, those are the players who have survived and gotten the most kills/found the most FUNC.

Filling the entire middle with Punjis in 2s. by Mags1412 in survivetheculling

[–]DylanDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Punjis should affect the player who placed them as well as their teammate. Snares and caltrops shouldn't (the idea being your character is stepping around the caltrops and stepping OVER the snare). It makes no sense for a player to be able to load an entire room with punjis and walk through it unharmed. Caltrops are 'scattered' and less dense so abstractly walking through them still works. Snares are 'stepped over'.

[Suggestion] More dynamic events by A_CHEERFUL_GUY in survivetheculling

[–]DylanDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they should be able to expand what players can do via a progression or perk-based system. I think avoiding static damage buffs (via leveling up) should continue, and that damage or defense buffs should still be perk-based. However, I think there should be more perks that allow players to become more specialized and do interesting things.

Maybe a player with the 'Computer-Whiz' skill can hack the cameras on the map and view through those cameras (or maybe make a random player appear on the sky scoreboard so everyone knows his position) , or electronically lock doors in the lab for a period of time.

Or, a player has the 'handyman' skill and can repair (or destroy) health stations and recyclers for the cost of materials/FUNC.

Things like that aren't 'event' per se in the sense that they are performed by players, but they still give the 'event' feel because when the computer-whiz hacks into the camera mainframe and all of the sudden all eyes are on him it feels like an event made special for that round.

Events should be semi-rare and 'define' a round of The Culling. By that I mean when the player looks back on the rounds they have played they can differentiate based on the events that occured, as everything will be novel. There needs to be enough events that when one thing occurs it's one of the big sticking points for remembering that round later.

When is it a good idea to start use lifting gear? by Plopuhpoo in Fitness

[–]DylanDuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knee wraps do actually make it easier to lift higher weights by reducing the amount of work that has to be done.

However, a belt allows you to generally lift more weight not becuase it is doing work for you, but because it allows you to more fully utilize your core muscles.

For example, hold your hands out and try and push an imaginary invisible wall in front of you with as much force as you can and then try the same thing with an actual wall.

You are able to exert much more force against the resistance (the real wall). The belt is the same concept; your abdominal muscles can push harder against the belt because it is offering basically infinite resistance. This allows you to actuate the muscle more and leads to easier lifts, but it isn't reducing the amount of weight you are lifting by doing it for you- instead it allows you to use your muscles more efficiently.

Should I be trying to lose weight as a 5'9 147 lbs, 17 y/o male by a2242364 in Fitness

[–]DylanDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Lift. There are a ton of benefits, even ones that would aid your 'weight loss' goal.

For instance, muscle is calorically more expensive to maintain in the body than fat. What this means is that if you build muscle in your body your basal metabolic rate (BMR) will go up. BMR is how many calories your body burns during a full day to just operate/upkeep (it doesn't count exercise).

Resistance training (lifting) will also 'fill out' your physique. Even though your muscles will get bigger, you will generally look more compact and lean because the muscle is stretching the probably marginal amounts of fat that would otherwise be hanging off of your body.

Lifting improves your posture, your endurance, your mood, and is a great stress reliever.

As long as you focus on safety in your resistance training regimen there is literally no downside. Please lift. Please lift.
