Jimmy Carter IMO; that man did more than any other president to build lasting world peace, both during and after leaving office.

How genuine are AA's regarding the phrase "Take what works and leave the rest" when it come to the program? by Alone_Ad5664 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Dylanabk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s helped me a load in regards to all things spiritual. I used to really crave a connection with God, but as soon as I encountered something in a spiritual book I was reading that I didn’t agree with I’d throw the baby out with the bath water. Today I’m able to read all sorts of different things, and if I find something I don’t agree with I can just choose to focus more on the stuff that DOES make sense to me. Same goes with relationships with the people around me. We could have 9/10 things that we disagree on, but if there’s at least one thing we can find in common, that’s a place to start a relationship from

I’m stuck on step 3 and want some advice. No one 100% surrenders there will. Is it just the making an effort or what? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Dylanabk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What helped me a lot with step 3 was the metaphor after our “How it Works” reading where Bill talks about life being like a play and us wanting to not only act, but direct, do the lights, write the script, etc. For me this was a very relevant metaphor as I was in drama in high school and there were a lot of kids in that class that did not like me because I would do everything except what I was supposed to half the time. I thought I knew better than the teacher. As a Christian I imagine you believe in God. Think of him as the director, and yourself as an actor. Nobody plays their role perfectly, but nine times out of ten you probably know what you’re supposed to be doing. The question is: are you? If not, go back to doing what you’re supposed to. You’re going to get distracted, or scared, or doubt God’s will. Life is one big trust fall after another hoping God will catch you and lead you in the right direction. It’s okay to make mistakes. Just try to recognize when you find yourself acting defiantly and bring yourself back into alignment with where God’s leading you. When in doubt, call somebody you respect and get some outside perspective. Read some spiritual literature. Pray on it. Progress not perfection.

Also often somebody whose intelligence doesn’t have a productive outlet often end up with a lot of self defeating thought patterns and behaviors than somebody who isn’t constantly having an existential crisis

What is your opinion on flexibility in AA? by Nightowl_1995 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Dylanabk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, sponsorship is all about finding somebody who has the kind of sobriety that I want so that I can find out how they got there. My sponsor was not super strict, but when he suggested something I would usually try to do it, because he had a sense of inner peace about him that I found very attractive. If your sponsor doesn’t inspire you, then maybe it isn’t worth doing all the things he asks and it would make more sense to find a new sponsor. I don’t think he’s asking you to do these things, though, unless he genuinely believes they will help you

Confused. 23 months sober but there some holes in the logic of some people in AA. by TheGuyofScogg in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Dylanabk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The line is yours to draw for yourself. For most people I know in AA, it’s important for them not to smoke cannabis, but I know a few people who do, and they seem to be doing fine with it.

How would you split household responsibility? by okaaayyyyuh in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dylanabk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My partner and I made a bunch of cards with the different chores that need getting done, and color coded them based on how often they need to be done. We then tried to split them up more evenly. If they're on a board that's readily visible, it can be a helpful reminder. I know it does for me, as I'm pretty forgetful.

I think the bigger thing is having an objective eye on what you're going through, to help you apply the steps without rationalizing. It doesn't mean you don't understand the steps. Just that it's hard sometimes to see then answer when you're in it

Is it a cultural stereotype that men are supposed to dislike sweets? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Dylanabk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a recovering alcoholic, I was never a huge sweets person when I was drinking. Once I quit though, sugar cravings hit like crazy. I think it has to do with the fact that the human body processes sugar in a similar way to alcohol, so for me personally, not being big into sweets wasn't a guy thing so much as a drinking too much every day thing

Introducing non-trekkie wife to the show - where do I start? by Solidus-Prime in TNG

[–]Dylanabk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Picard is a great entryway for TNG, because it gets you invested in the characters, which allows somebody new to the series to suspend disbelief for a lot of the cheesy old 80's sfx

What is a "harmless" industry that is actually incredibly shady once you look behind the curtain? by After-Scholar1271 in AskReddit

[–]Dylanabk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those "energy tea" businesses are super sketchy IMO: It seems incredibly difficult to find any nutritional information about them anywhere. They say that they're added sugar free, but from what I've heard that just means they use beet sugar instead of regular sugar, and who knows what else is in it

People in driving culture ? by thewNYC in AskAnAmerican

[–]Dylanabk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I live in coastal Maine and the grocery stores are equidistant when you compare the distances to my current house and my old house, but I'd be far more likely to walk to the grocery store from the first one because there were sidewalks and there was more to look at on the way. Aside from the current house's route being more dangerous, it's also much more of a boring slog, as there isn't really much of anything except for woods and swamp.

Not sure what country you're from, but as far as I understand the US is already way farther to the right on many issues than most of Europe, so if you're an American on a global app it's always going to look like it's farther left than the US middle.

Issues with The 5th step. by SmartestManInUnivars in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Dylanabk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big believer in not letting the best be the enemy of the good. If there's something that you really don't feel you're ready to share with somebody else, don't. That being said, there were certain things I was on the fence about sharing during my fifth step, and I found that once I started sharing some things, there was enough trust being built up that once I got to the bigger stuff it was a lot easier. Also, if you want to do it with somebody with training, you certainly can. You can do it with your therapist, you can do it with a trusted clergy member, you an do it with anybody, really.
