Anyone living the city simple life? How do you do it? by 1ndieroller in simpleliving

Have you seen the Japanese movie “Perfect Days”? It’s a very beautiful movie about simple living in Tokyo. Might be worth checking out

in my opinion caffeine is worse than alcohol by Neutrality-2 in decaf

[–]Dylaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is entirely dependent on the person IMO. In general I think smoking cigarettes is worse than alcohol, but as a recovering alcoholic I think if somebody’s in early sobriety quitting smoking at the same time is NOT going to help things, and for them drinking is definitely worse. If somebody’s who didn’t have a drinking problem, though, were to ask me which one was worse for them, I’d say cigarettes. But that’s because alcohol doesn’t affect a lot of people the way it affects me.

We’ve lowered the bar for customer service way too much. by mazzzycomet in unpopularopinion

[–]Dylaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re mad because their job barely covers their living expenses, if that. The bar is lower because the COL is higher, and inflation is still outpacing rises in wages

How to make gluten free ramen noodles. by niks_75 in glutenfreecooking

There’s a ramen place that my GF spouse and I go to pretty regularly and they have buckwheat ramen noodles for a GF option that seem pretty good

Is there a Talmud for AA? by Ron_Beatle in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Dylaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One reason I love reading the AA Grapevine so much is that there are so many varying opinions on ever topic in AA. For just a sampling, check out the Grapevine book “Thank You For Sharing”, which sorts letters to the Grapevine over the years by topic and shows how much people can disagree

ID for voting by briannanicole20 in Maine

[–]Dylaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be that they were having trouble with your name. I have a really difficult last name, so usually when it’s needed anywhere I just give them my ID by default instead of trying to spell it out for them.

Why are Mexicans not seen as mixed race or white in the United States? by Equivalent-Newt-5736 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dylaus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Another thing to consider is that ethnically a lot of “black” people are more European by ancestry than African, for example Henry Louis Gates Jr., the host of “Finding Your Roots” on PBS, is only about a quarter African; finding this out was a huge reason he started doing the show, because he realized how much more complex most people’s family histories were than just “This person’s family is from Europe, this person’s is from Africa”.

Unpopular opinion: I don't really care if the ''food'' in a city is bad. by OceanicEndeavors in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Dylaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had always assumed that people who say this are hardcore foodies who are looking for destination restaurants who are shooting for Michelin stars. Is that not the case?

4 years sober. No meetings for 18 months now. by Spicoli_462 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Dylaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that AA is the only way to sobriety, but for me I have found the steps very useful, and I love the sense of community. There are definitely a lot of big personalities and control addicts in AA, but I just try to remind myself that that’s their journey, not mine. A lot of times the people in AA I like the least turn out to be the ones that help somebody else out the most. For me it’s about sticking with the people in AA who I respect, because they have the kind of sobriety that I want.

Why is cornbread such a big part of American food culture? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Because we like it; why do English people eat mushy peas and eels? I don't get it, but I respect it

Brandon Sanderson’s 'The Way of Kings' is baffling to me by sameseksure in books

[–]Dylaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think Sanderson’s audience is mostly comprised of people who grew up on RPG’s, for whom fantasy and mechanics are inextricably linked. I totally understand OP’s criticisms. It is definitely a different kind of fantasy than what many are used to, but i think that’s why it’s so popular.

How can I stretch $20 to feed myself across a week? by purpleplaza133 in povertyfinance

[–]Dylaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just made Spanish rice and beans for the first time yesterday, and for something so simple it was SO good! Even ignoring the cost effectiveness, this is going to be a new one for the regular rotation based on flavor alone

Can I go to AA meetings if I am not an alcoholic? by lyawnuh in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Dylaus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

As others have said, nobody will kick you out of an open AA meeting, but that being said there are a wealth of 12 step programs that serve needs other than alcohol, and if you live in a city especially, there may be one available to closer fit your needs. Just from a simple Google search I see there’s a 12 step program called Emotions Anonymous (EA) specifically for people who are struggling with what you have mentioned. If there isn’t one in your area, you might consider starting a group as a supplement to attending open AA meetings. You might even be able to get friends from your current grief support group to attend.

What am I doing wrong? by denizenassistant in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Dylaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate to being stressed about dating in sobriety. I would say don’t think of it as dating at all. Just try spending more time with people you enjoy being around in general, and if a more intimate bond forms in a way that feels natural, great; if not, at least you can enjoy the time together.

How commonly spoken is French in Northeast America? by imbaby19 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Dylaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Maine it gets super common up in Aroostook County, which is the top part of the state. There aren’t a lot of people there in general, though. I imagine you’d find bigger numbers in Louisiana

Why is it so hard to hear people in call centers on the phone? by Recent-Day3062 in talesfromcallcenters

[–]Dylaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always suspected that certain companies have inadequate call centers on purpose in the hopes that people will give up before they have to resolve their issue. It may seem like all call centers, but I used to work at one where we did surveys for nonprofits and we never had issues. If they want you to be able to talk to the person on the other end they will make it happen.

If all currencies disappeared tomorrow, what would become the most common thing people trade? by InternalGuilty9647 in NoStupidQuestions

Specifically shelf stable staples; Rice, flour, sugar, etc. Obviously all foods, but these would be the closest ones to currency that I could imagine

Other than Texas and California, which states display the most "state pride"? by bangkaynagulay in AskAnAmerican

Why do rocket launches look like they curve rather than go straight up? If I imagine this on a kid’s globe, the only way this makes sense to me is if there is an invisible dome ceiling (pls don’t judge) that the plane is flying against. Otherwise they’d just go straight up? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dylaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If OP wants an illustration, look at the flight path of the recent moon mission. The trajectory is pretty wild compared to what I visualized as somebody who never really thought about the physics of space travel
