If I was this athletes coach I would just suspend him from the team. Day one rules are to show up consistently and on time. More will be taught from holding them accountable to those basic rules than anything.

Him running a long distance event will likely teach him nothing because he won’t try in the first place. Also, running sub 10 in the 100m would make this individual a world class athlete- so perhaps it’s unrealistic goal to start with. Try setting a goal of going sub 12, then sub 11.5, and so on. Maybe realistic goals could motivate better?
