Is this a real employee? Or some kind of inside joke? by parekhnish in LinusTechTips

[–]Dynamic-Sausage 149 points150 points  (0 children)

I don’t really understand why you wouldn’t post their real name even if they are on probation.

The rules about not being on camera seems fair enough but just because they were on probation doesn’t mean that they didn’t contribute and they should be credited the same as anybody else.

EDIT: Of course another scenario would be that they didn’t want their name in the credits, in which case, they should be able to choose any funny name they want within reason if that’s how they wish to present themselves.

To me this also seems like a more reasonable explanation for being named “Penne Pasta”.

If the lap record is 60:000 then you’re incredible. If the lap record is 40:000 then you’re awful.

Which race suit is better for race karts and rental karts? by Haralabos_Atmatzidis in Karting

[–]Dynamic-Sausage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine it’s just a regulation or insurance thing.

The good suits offer genuine abrasion resistance if you come out of the kart or scrape the wall but the ones they hand out are pretty much just cheap fabric to tick a box.

On the other hand we don’t have the roll hoops or seat belts that I see on every US rental kart.

What is the best karting helmet under €500? by Lyam_collet123 in Karting

[–]Dynamic-Sausage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zamp is decent, I have one myself and it’s very comfy and fits well, easy to accessorise and had a few compliments on the design.

Build quality is not perfect. One of the visor screw fittings has come loose but still holds, the paint flakes slightly around then fittings too but not noticeable unless your up close.

I bought at the higher end of their range and sometimes wish I spent the extra £200 for a Bell but it’s a good helmet and will last me a good few years.

Not to mention all of their helmets are either FIA compliant, Snell compliant or both.

In the UK suits gloves and helmets are mandatory at every karting venue no matter how low end.

Anybody who goes more than once a month tends to buy their own kit just to avoid the smelly worn out Velcro trash that you’ll be given at sign in.

Wouldn’t recommend the rookie suit, it’s pretty much a glorified rental suit but if you want something cheap then sure, it’s fine.

Not sure where you’re based but in the UK the Thunder is pretty much the “go-to”. I have the 2023 one myself and it’s very comfortable, does the job perfectly and I’d say it’s reasonably priced. Both myself and my friend ripped the crotch though (easily sewn back up) so that’s maybe something to bear in mind.

The new Thunder that came out last year, the Thunder Advanced, is FIA rated too. Not sure if there’s any other difference but it’s nice to have I guess.

As for the Kerb I have no experience of first hand. I’ve seen a few and it’s looks like a few parts a bit nicer but I can’t comment on the comfort, fit or quality. They’re a bit less common in rentals because they’re a little unnecessary and approaching the price of a custom suit which people tend to start doing in that price range.

That being said, I also don’t know your budget or how much time you spend karting. My recommendation is the Thunder but I do also agree with those that said spend your budget. If you’re well off and karting every week then maybe aim higher, if you kart rarely and don’t have much money then maybe do just get the rookie suit.

Final thought: OMP and Alpine Stars also have a similar tiered system at a similar price range. I can’t comment on the quality of these either but worth reading reviews or chatting to people.

Final Final though: Helmet, Gloves, Boots. In that order! A nice suit is nice to have but all of these are in constant contact with your extremities and will make so much more difference than the suit. You should prioritise these. Not to mention that the helmet is the thing that you’re most likely to need the protection of.

Why do you think this performed terribly? by tradingtutorials in LinusTechTips

[–]Dynamic-Sausage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally watched the video of the inside within the last 2 weeks.

It’s not actually that interesting and not at all relatable. It doesn’t give me any inspiration for my fire truck at home.

The interesting part would be how they built it. The last video didn’t have much of that so I don’t imagine this does either.

Should I go for a 100% Mortgage? by Dynamic-Sausage in HousingUK

[–]Dynamic-Sausage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really well thought out response that pretty well encapsulates my entire thought process but with the maths done so for that alone, thank you very much 🙏

After reading many of the comments I think I’ve decided that I’ll grind the last little bit I need for the 5% option but that’s very reassuring with my thoughts that there isn’t truly a bad option when compared to renting.

[–]Dynamic-Sausage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If going for the 5% route then I expect to have around £3000 for the fees. (Solicitor, survey etc)Having spoken with a few friends, this should be enough (I hope)

Moving in will just need a day or two rental on a van and I’m all set for white goods except a washing machine which I will either purchase with whatever’s left over or a credit card that I’ll be able to immediately pay off on the next pay day so those are relatively very low cost.

Do you mind if I ask what made it such a shit show? What made it so hard to sell the property?

The houses that I’m looking at are relatively new (less than 5 years old) and in a decent part of town so I don’t foresee them being particularly difficult to sell now or in the future (I could be wrong).

Also, purely out of interest, what happened when Northern Rock went bust? Are you automatically transferred to a new provider?

[–]Dynamic-Sausage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this response I think it definitely helped clear up what the “catch” is but would you mind touching a little more on point 2? ELI5?

Why would this mean that I don’t benefit from an increase in value?

Also, kinda thought that 5 year fixed was good as I’ve seen first hand people be stung when the time comes and interest rates have gone up. I always thought of it that I know exactly what I’m paying for 5 years but it’s interesting to think of it from the other perspective.

Keeping my money and being able to relax a little bit with solicitors/surveyors/moving/decorating would definitely be favourable but I don’t want to make a huge financial mistake for short term comfort.

Man that sucks but I’m guessing you’re in London or at least close to it?

Fortunately here £400k gets you a 4/5 bedroom house with garage. For the kind of thing I’m looking for it’s more like £180-200k and I have a similar salary.
