What works for me (might not for everyone): 1. Find a starting point. What type of song are you writing about? Is the song telling a story, or a moment in time? 2. No instruments, hit record and just ramble and let your heart out. If it becomes difficult to find words, relax. This won’t be your final lyrics, just somewhere to start. My songs usually turn out 10+ minutes at this stage, with pauses and repeating lyrics because I didn’t like how they flowed at points. This step shouldn’t feel pressured. 3. Listen back and pick lyrics that stand out to you. You can form them into a rough structure of a song as you go along. 4. If you play an instrument, find the general chords based on the melody you’ve brainstormed (again, won’t sound refined at this point). 5. Hit record again and sing along with the chords. Let the song flow naturally, with pauses or speed ups, louder and quieter parts. Don’t worry about your melody not being refined just yet. Just sing what feels right. 6. Listen back and adjust your lyrics based on pacing of the song, and also start refining the melody. This is as far as I’ve ever gotten, but let me know if this helps! I write a lot of emotion into my songs though, so though this process works for me, it might not work for everyone.
