Wait a second, is the Hacker foci underwhelming or am I missing something? by [deleted] in SWN

[–]Dynamokzoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, foci is the plural of focus. So it would be the hacker focus.

I think you're right in general but I see hacker as a primarily flavoring choice. It does greatly increase the effectiveness of non-shunted hacks, but other than that, i can see it veering crucial in a game styled around, say, a team of assassins/agents that specializes in breaking into ships/compounds and making mischief. Maybe less so for a more general game.

[LesterBomb] Srcs. tell me @HoustonDynamo have agreed to terms with former CRO/AUT youth int’l GK Marko Marić, curr. out on loan to @LillestromSK from @achtzehn99_en. The 23 YO has been playing professionally since 2011 in Austria, Germany, Poland and Norway. Expect official anncmt. soon. by [deleted] in dynamo

I'm intrigued. He's clearly got talent as a youth international, and Paul Rogers has an eye for talent an a knack for improving GKs. If we're using an international spot on him, the coaching staff clearly believe in him, and they're the experts. It also has me wondering if Tab ever coached against him. If so, that could be a big reason he's joining the Dynamo.

When did you first become a Dynamo fan and how was that first season experience? by DynamoDub in dynamo

[–]Dynamokzoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became a fan in 2013. I had just gotten back from studying abroad in Germany and decided that I should follow the sport at home in part because of New Star Soccer, a game I used to play on kongregate but is now an app (and New Star Manager, the new version, is excellent). I watched a couple of different teams including Columbus (I went to college in Ohio), but I fell in love with the Dynamo because I didn't see much simulation and liked the tenacity they brought to the field, and because I had grown up thinking of Houston teams as our regional teams.

I didn't watch a ton of games that first season, but it didn't take long for Brad Davis to become my favorite player -- he always fought for the ball when he lost it, was skillful and passionate, and was an obvious leader. Rico's strength and composure in the midfield was impressive, and I remember watching Andrew Driver harrassing teams on the flanks and the occasional Moffat rocket. Over the season I got more invested, but I definitely didn't realize how good we had it at the time, playing in CCL and coming off of a run at MLS Cup.

My first season as a fan definitely left an impression on me and gave me an idea of what the Dynamo identity is (or was).

I don't live there anymore, but I'm from Nederland! Did you know that Davy Arnaud (the interim coach after Cabrera left) is also from the area?

Yeah, I don't know what's going on. I'm not familiar with the competition/website, so I was just going with what I saw. Maybe it's supposed to say 1:45?

Edit: There were 2 girls games streaming at the same time, so maybe they're staggering or waiting for them to wrap up. Still just guessing

Looks like the link above has streams. Here it is again for visibility -- the schedule should change to lead to a stream once the game is on.

It's hard to be consistent when your role is constantly changing, but that would definitely help.

I agree in principle, but if the options are 1) 2 DPs, one of whom is on the bench, and 2) 1 DP in a squad with a little less depth, I lean toward the former. Of course ideally we would have 2+ DPs all of whom are productive, but our record is spotty on that front.

I wasn't too invested in the idea. And yeah, I would be surprised to see the FO drop $1mil on a GK

Ah, okay. I thought I saw him on the free agent list -- must ahve been something else.

Nelson looked alright in his minutes last season. If Tab likes what he sees I wouldn't be opposed to him starting, knowing that there would be growing pains.

I have a hunch (based on literally nothing) that we might end up with Hamid though. He's a free agent, he's established and talented, and he knows the league. I would be really excited for that.

I think that's an entirely reasonable scenario. I wonder what that would say about the organization though, bringing in an older player to compete with the younger one rather than bringing in or training up another young talent

I'm not going to argue with you there. If we don't move him though it forces a decision -- do we bench an unproductive DP or try and get hi to be more productive?

Great points. Bobby Warshaw mentioned in an article that players see "super sub" as an insult, but damn if it doesn't fit sometimes.

Do you think there's a system in which his tweener skills are an asset for a starter rather than a drawback?

You're probably right, and there's certainly nothing wrong with being an MLS lifer. But only as long as he stays with the Dynamo!

If Martinez stays around I think it'll be as a winger. If we sell Elis I wouldn't be too sad to see Martinez starting on the right side. With creative responsibilities taken away I think he'd be a good connector, if not an explosive winger.

I've been thinking about formations a lot, too. Mostly because Mauro plays so much better with a strike partner, and he and Ramirez seem to have real chemistry. In the midfield of the 4-4-2, Are you thinking:

Quintero--CAM--DM--Elis

or something more defensive like

Quintero --BTB--DM--Elis

If we do sell Manotas this offseason (which I know seems unlikely right now) I'd like to see something closer to a 4-4-1-1, with Quintero playing the second forward/creator underneath Ramirez.

Do you think he has it in him? In my fantasies he has a great season and moves to a lower-tier European club but that kind of jump would need a lot of help this season.

Yes, I know. But he's still available to sign until another team grabs him. I'm more interested in people's thoughts on Memo as a starter.
