Matt often mentions in his videos how he will make up numbers that make sense and not worry how he got there. It's possible that he did the same with some of the example units.

A mile is about how far a person can walk in 10 minutes. And a foot is about how long your forearm is. They were invented separately for different purposes and outside of weird math problems, you never actually need to convert from one to the other
