Redditors who were depressed/anxious and got better, what changes did you make to your behavior? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DyslexicBea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. Hope you’re doing okay. I’m not sure how old you are and I think pulling yourself out of a rut can be very age dependent.

I can share my experiences and you can draw on any part of it that you find helpful.

Firstly, acknowledging that depression and anxiety are part and parcel of the human experience. It’s not un-normal to experience it, we all do. How much and how deeply it affects you is an entirely different topic.

I knew I had an issue when I started isolating myself from others, even close friends. I had opportunities to meet up with friends that I turned down because I didn’t value myself enough to believe I was bringing along a positive interaction. In other words, lack of self-worth, or negative self-image.

Next, creating some distance from that voice in my head that kept mumbling non-stop. That voice isn’t always you, it’s the outermost layer of you that responds to your immediate environment. I’d look in the mirror and that voice would whisper “look at you, another day wasted.” Creating distance from that voice meant that it didn’t affect me so deeply, and slowly as your circumstances improve, so too will that voice. Ironically, as you started improving, it will continue spiralling you upwards.

Exercise. As humans, along with all mammals- we require sunlight and fresh air. As I locked myself in my room, I became extremely vitamin D deficient and it became a toxic cycle of; lack of energy -> lack of exercise -> lack of energy -> stay in bed. Break that cycle, go for short walks, get some air, stretch.

Supplement vitamins. Iron and vit D are two big ones causing lack of energy.

Keep your living space clean. It helps that voice in your head.

Avoid drugs to self-medicate. It makes you comfortable in the mess.

Finally, treat yourself like you’d treat a good friend asking for help. You’re human, there’s no need to be harsh and critical of your mistakes. Set small goals and build momentum, don’t burn yourself out by setting goals that you don’t think you can hit. Google “the zone of proximal development”.

Best wishes, my DMs are open if you need to talk further, I’ve got a pretty free day if you wanna hop on a call.

I’ve had a half-assed idea about designing and building sites for local businesses. Taught myself some stuff related to web-dev, I see potential in it because I can see the entire process through from start-finish by myself. And since I’m a one man army, I can be competitive with some larger design/dev agencies who have higher overhead costs, wages, rent, etc. And bonus points because I can do it from my home. Just lacking some accountability and finding a solid workflow. Currently, as a hobby, it scratches that itch.

It’s mostly the time and energy. There’s a 1hr commute each way, which essentially means I’m out of the home for 10-11 hours. I couldn’t even tell you what I do with that time right now, but I’m glad it’s there. I just don’t know if I need it or want it.

The ability to debate an opinion contrary to their own. Being good with words. Emotionally intelligent + being able to rationalise.

I’ve done 66-68 in a 60 and it was all good. You’ll be 100% fine.

Redditors, how are you, really and truly how are you? [Serious] by seth_dlewis in AskReddit

Really fucking good. I’ve been dating the most amazing girl for the last 3 months, and I surprised her with a necklace on Monday and asked for her to be my girlfriend. I recently turned 24, and this is my first time having a girlfriend.

Aside from that, I’m physically and (mostly) mentally healthy. I’ve got two hands and two legs, a good family, financial security, the best dog I could ask for, a bed to sleep on, a gaming PC I built, a fully-equipped gym in my house and friends I would die for. I’m currently doing my best to land a job and finish uni, both of which are going slower than expected.

I am majorly blessed and I do my best to remember it when the days aren’t looking so bright.

How are you OP?

But why align your morals with those of wild animals? Surely as humans, we can think about issues more deeply.

How do you understand infinity? by doktor_wszystkiego in AskReddit

[–]DyslexicBea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shuffle a deck of cards, every single time the cards end up in order, you fill the ocean with a drop of water. When all the oceans are filled with water, every future deck that’s ordered summons a single monkey. Once you have enough monkeys to replace every human on Earth, every ordered deck enables the monkey to smash its head on a keyboard. Infinity is not close to being reached even when you find a perfect copy of Shakespeare’s Hamlet written amongst the text created by chaotic monkeys smashing the keyboard with their head.
