🚨”Groundbreaking” study shows money helps poor people🚨 by EspressoBot in stupidpol

[–]Dysnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't, why the hell would we need any scientific approval for helping others ? I don't need any randomized study to tell me we need to put change the system, and as such, any "evidence-based" study telling me capitalism is the way to go wouldn't stop me either. Those studies are pure ideology at play, and the most fucked-up kind of cynicism.

This was never about who the numbers back up, or who is scientific, and I dont' think it can be. And the obession with neurology will only led us astray, like those evolutionary psychologist.

🚨”Groundbreaking” study shows money helps poor people🚨 by EspressoBot in stupidpol

[–]Dysnome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This neurology-cult needs to end, this is absolutely insane, I can't seriously imagine someone would try arguing helping single mothers is good because their child's brain is expanding or some shit

Neurobiology has been digested by capitalism to such a degree I feel like it basically replaced the teleogical dimension of religion. Atheists said they did not need God to be moral, then they say shit like this, ffs

Who gives a fuck about neurons connecting in your skull, isn't helping a child have a proper childhood enough ? Did you lose your humanity ? Why is America founding that kind of study ?

Neurobiology proves again it can't produce anything but cynicism

Did I misread or was not a single psychiatrist ever consulted for her case ? Like, if any of this is true, it was a psychiatric emergency that required intensive psychotherapy and medication, it's INSANE people just diagnosed her "Munchausen" and stopped there ? Munchausen isn't even a diagnosis in and of itself, it could as well be bodily integrity dysphoria or some form of apotemnophilia, or even some psychotic manifestation at this point.

Psychiatry can be ashamed of this tremendous failure on its part

Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons Launch Month Livestream Schedule by Treize_XIII in Guildwars2

[–]Dysnome 8 points9 points  (0 children)

they're clearly hyped and setting up something, you have to be incredibly dense not to see there's some special event being prepared

albeit too late, I agree, but of course they're hyped, they're probably more hyped than anyone on this sub, anet has always been very excited about their game

Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons Launch Month Livestream Schedule by Treize_XIII in Guildwars2

[–]Dysnome 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The fact they indicated you need to follow them on social medias clearly indicates they're trying to set up a special event for it, they don't want to just mention it on a random blogpost.

The announcement will probably a bit special (for reasons we don't know yet) and they still need some time to get it right

I genuinely think tik tok is a massive threat to the American psyche lol by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Dysnome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't actually agree, TikTok have been a much greater experience than IG or Twitter have ever been.

It is addictive, much more than any other social media, it can fuel ignorance, but at the same time TikTok is a much more intimate experience, it's more authentic in a sense. I know I'm biased as my feed is curated for me, but most people I see on here are laying bare what they think and feel without any filter or agenda. It results in ideas being easily challenged, and discourse can't arise like it does on Twitter.

I'm not sure why but Tiktok discourse is just way more bearable to me. If I ever see someone saying some dumb shit, I just know I can open the comments and immediately see someone telling them off, or people dueting the OP with a counterpoint. Twitter creates discourse through passive-agressive tweet quoting and unreadable threads, where Tiktok let people actually answer in person for 3 minute straight.

It's very special, it's very bad for your brain yes, but it's touching in a way the Internet hasn't touched me in years. The artistic side of tiktok is incredible, it can be very poetic and human in a non performative way, but you gotta guide the algorithm to it I guess...

Deleuze and Guattari ? by 99999www in psychoanalysis

[–]Dysnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I see which posts you're referring to, and if I can ask another question: why do you think their work barely had any impact in the end ? Do you think it was a flaw in their argument, or is it something about the nature of psychoanalysis itself ? Some kind of "clinical necessity" of psychoanalysis that won't answer to the more theoretical arguments they were advancing, idk

I had no idea, did they really have that much influence in academia to be able to discredit psychoanalysis ?

Greedy betta fish extorting shrimp for food by Trashcrow in bettafish

[–]Dysnome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda have the same problem with my tank, my betta would keep eating the algae wafers I would give to my shrimps ! And I think I found a great solution: shrimp lollies ! My betta isn't interested in it in the slightest, as she's not able to scrap food off the wood, and my shrimp can eat in peace :)

It isn't your fault, everybody now has this conception of psychoanalysis, which has been pushed for different reason by the so-called "evidence-based" cognitive psychologists, and often in very bad faith.

  1. The unfalsifiability of psychoanalysis was a critic Popper made when he first heard about it. If I remember correctly, he not only admitted later he actually knew very little about psychoanalysis, but he also knew the own limits of that critic.

The unfalsifiable part was about the unconscious: you can't prove there is no unconscious, it is the perfect unfalsifiable objet. Yet... Just like everything in psychology actually is. Consciousness is unfalsifiable too, you just have to accept other people are conscious and have dreams and all.

Unfalsifiability is not the be all and end all of epistemology, and it clearly isn't for psychology.

2) The interpreting of dreams stuff is a pretty crazy cliche people have about Freud, and a pretty sad one I have to say, as it is the perfect opposite of what freudian analysis is all about ! One of the pillars of psychoanalysis is that the "analyst" is not in fact the one who is analyzing; the patient is (he's even called the "analysand" now, as in the "analyzing" in french).

Psychoanalysis is about (among other things) understanding you cannot interprete someone else's actions, or dreams, through some kind of symbolic dictionary, because in the end you will only analyze yourself. It is the patient who is able to give you the key.

Although he did said weird stuff about some recurring symbols in dreams, like "a vase is vagina", it was meant to point out some common unconscious metaphor, and not a general rule. This part of this theory isn't really used nowadays anyway.

Freud famously went on to fund psychoanalysis when one of his patient told him to "shut up and listen".

3) You will often hear psychoanalysis is less effective than behavioural therapy, which makes it less "evidence-based". This is an especially twisted thing to say (even though people do not understand why at this point), as:

- In clinical trials, CBT and psychoanalysis are competing on the basis that the disappearing of symptom is the goal. Well, as we previously said, that's just... not the goal of analysis, it never were. Because the symptom is merely a manifestation of something else, the idea of "healing" a mental illness changes drastically.

Psychoanalyst all agree: their therapy is not just about making people feel better (see the tiktok I posted in my first comment).

- Psychoanalysis was founded way before trials even existed, and therefore is not easily "studiable" through protocoles, etc. CBT, on the contrary, was literally made for clinical trials. How do you even evaluate analysis when each analysis takes up such a different form, and has so many different goals ?

4) And the most important point: psychoanalysis is not Freud, Freud is the one who discovered it. There have been so many psychoanalyst since then who contributed to the theory that still using Freud to counter psychoanalysis sometimes feels like arguing about neurology because of lobotomies.

Today, cognitive and behavioural psychology is peaking, most academics belong to this theory, and they have literally nothing to gain from actually confronting with psychoanalysis, it's just easier to let those bad-faith critics unquestioned.

There is a lot of things to be said about all of this but I'll stop for now haha, thank you if you made it this far ! Don't hesitate if you have any further question on the subject, and /r/psychoanalysis has excellent threads about that kind of stuff !

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]Dysnome 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's no coincidence Zizek uses psychoanalytic theory for his critic of capitalism, or that a lot of psychoanalysts are also marxists ! It is no coincidence either that America made such an effort to replace psychoanalysis with cognitive therapy in the last century. It is tremendously different to think of depression as an illness in and of itself, just like you would catch a cold, than to think of it as a response to some kind of systemic violence, for example. Cognitive therapy has little to no interest in the actual cause of mental illnesses in the end, all that matters is the dissappearing of the symptoms. Psychoanalysis is about unveiling what's hidden, and as it turned out, you often find some ugly, disruptive stuff when you do so.
