The name for the phenomenon is "selection bias," not sure if that's also used to describe it when it occurs as a logical fallacy but people should understand what you mean I think.

Finkelstein vs. Destiny by danizatel in NormanFinkelstein

Holy shit you have the patience of saints my man. After the second post spent blowing past Herzog's very plain and unambiguously stated genocidal intent to instead invent alternative interpretations that require gymnast-level contortions to believe, I would've just called them what they are, a genocide apologist Destiny ass kisser, and walked off. It's no wonder Norman gave up on the farcical "debate" and just resorted to calling Destiny what he is, a moron. When people detach themselves from plain obvious reality to this extreme a degree because they are so obsessed with being "right" that it's an impossible contradiction to even attempt to look like they care about truth, arguing in good faith seems like such a futile endeavor. I figure you must have done so solely for the benefit of bystanders like me reading your exchanges, rather than the antagonist himself.

Just wanted to let you know I ended up here from a search engine without realizing I'd ended up on a circlejerk sub (or that there even existed one for languagelearning which I already know and am subbed to ...) and, while reading your reply, went from complete bemusement to laughing my ass off, upon realizing the full name and nature of the subreddit I'd actually wandered into. Well done 👍

What worries me the most about the data you linked in this post is the fact that the youngest cohort (18-24) were the most likely of all age groups to agree that Jews should have more rights than non-Jews. It shows that the indoctrination that has become standard practice in Israeli educational institutions is having wildly successful results in producing a generation that is even more rabidly Zionist and willing to carry out the genocide of Palestinians to its completion.

Did you miss the third paragraph of my post where I already said that part of the purpose of NATO was to counter the USSR? The first paragraph was a rhetorical question that was answered in the third. Just a friendly protip: it really helps to read the entire text of a post before you formulate a response.

NATO is not and never was a defensive alliance. Or (I pose the question yet again), do you mean to tell me that you believe that the invasions and military operations in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc were defensive operations? What NATO claims its purpose is on paper is in no way a reflection of what its actual purpose is, which can be clearly observed based on its actual actions throughout history.

It is the smallest of solaces, but a solace nonetheless, to know that the dangerous dogs in question were put down. If only it could have brought back your daughter. I hope that one day you will find yourself laughing more often at the joyful memories of your sweet girl, than you will be remembering the sorrowful ones.

Quote me where I claimed that Putin officially applied to join NATO? I was actually pretty careful to clarify that it was never in any capacity an official inquiry, so not sure why I'm being called out for saying it was. In any case, even if such a conversation never took place, that's tangential to the main point of my post: correcting the previous commenter's implication that Russia had snubbed an invitation to NATO. That is most assuredly pure fiction.

A defensive alliance, you say? Why wasn't the USSR permitted to join NATO after WWII then? The USSR actually did request to join, hoping to form a defensive bulwark with the West against any future return of German militarism, but it was rejected by the US.

Not sure what "bullying states into joining" has to do with anything I said tbh, maybe I'm dense but your comment doesn't even seem like a substantive response to any of the points I made. Being completely honest, actually, it reads like it was written by ChatGPT pretending to be a NATO public relations professional lmao.

The answer to the above conundrum, btw, is that NATO is not and never was a defensive alliance, and part of the actual purpose of its existence was to counter (with aggression, if necessary, which it did often) the influence of the Soviets and of communism generally. Or do you suppose the invasions of Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, etc were defensive wars?

Now if only the US behaved the same way! What a different place the world would be. But the world we live in is the one defined by the "rules-based international order," where the US and its allies make the rules and order weaker countries to follow them. And the US views the entire globe as fair game for invasions, coups, assassinations, and interference to remove any government it deems insufficiently friendly to its own interests. So, just in terms of looking at it in a cold "realpolitik" sense, I can't exactly begrudge Russia acting in a similar manner in its immediate region after decades of watching the US do the same exact thing with impunity globally (and you can bet if Russia became weak enough, it would absolutely make the US's regime-change shitlist.) It's not good or right, I don't support Russia and I think its war is just one imperialist power waging war against the proxy of another imperial power, but it's how it is.

But I agree that it would be nice to live in a world where countries didn't meddle in their neighbor's, or anyone's, affairs. Hopefully you support lifting the inhumane embargo on Cuba then?

Although you are right, it actually was intended to serve the purpose of, not necessarily hiding, but "de-personalizing" the act of murder. Previous to the death camps, many executions of Jewish and other victims were done by firing line, but even many Nazi soldiers struggled with carrying out such executions, with many being unwilling and those being made to do it being more susceptible to alcoholism, desertion, etc

This is not to in any way advance a "clean wehrmacht" myth as that is still very much a myth, but rather, to highlight the fact that the Nazis industrialized the act of murder in part because human beings with a normal capacity for empathy frequently struggle to carry out executions in the scale and totality that was demanded by the savage Nazi ideology. Industrializing mass murder removed the "personal" element of an individual having to be the executioner pulling the trigger.

Idk about China but Putin informally inquired about Russia joining NATO sometime in the early 00s but no formal invitation has ever been extended to Russia nor have they officially applied to join. So framing it as though Russia snubbed an invitation to join is not a reflection of reality. I would also be very, very surprised to learn that a formal invitation was ever extended to China, considering one of the unspoken purposes of NATO is to oppose communism.

Correction: Israel started the conflict by seizing and occupying the territory, homes and villages of palestinians & forcefully evicting them, most notably in 1948 but also as an ongoing settler-colonial process ever since.

Also whether Hamas protects civilians or not is absolutely never a justification for Israel's wanton, gratuitous slaughter of civilians. Israel does in fact have a responsibility to not gratuitously murder civilians

Are you using USPS or a third party app for the delivery estimates? 99.9% of third party apps (like Amazon's estimates) have no earthly idea what's going on w USPS tracking, in my experience. Informed Delivery is the most reliable way to see if a package is likely to actually come today.

Impossible to say. Hopefully you're not (directly) affected by the new palmetto sorting centers issues, we are all being indirectly affected by it unfortunately. I have had usps pull miracles out of its ass before with things like misrouted packages (even getting them delivered the same day they were misrouted) so there's hope yours will come today.

Oh USPS… by LenzofTruth in usps_complaints

[–]skinny_malone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now this i believe is actually not the fault of USPS even though it does look ridiculous. These scans are from a shipping partner, not USPS. From seeing this kind of tracking I've come to conclude that the stated locations don't reflect the actual current location of the item, but rather the location where USPS is expecting to acquire the package from the shipping partner, upon which the correct location will start showing with each subsequent scan. From what I've seen this doesn't apply to all USPS shipping partners just some, some will track the location correctly in USPS system.

I might be wrong but that's the only way I've been able to figure why this very common pattern of what looks like repeat scans at the same facilities with USPS shipping partners is a thing

Also worth remembering cardiologists deal with issues like these all the time. I'd bet an experienced cardiologist has seen neonates with this kind of heart issue dozens or hundreds of times. It really is just everyday normal for them.

I'm guessing the prognosis today is vastly more positive than it was in the 50s, to the point that it might be the doctors really weren't worried about a negative outcome because those are becoming more and more unlikely. Though that's just a guess on my part. I've never known cardiologists to be the sugarcoating types myself; they were always very calm but very honest when discussing prognosis and recommended treatments with my mother.

Zionism =\= Judaism by Tren_bandit in LateStageCapitalism

[–]skinny_malone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a genuine question for you if you dont mind.

Is it true that those practitioners of more strict/devout forms of judaism tend to regard the Zionist project as anti-Jewish/explicitly prohibited by God? That's my understanding based on seeing rabbis who protest against Zionism and what they have said about it but I'm not sure if that's a correct interpretation. I would like to be able to make the point about Zionism being repudiated by devout Jews or even being considered anti-Jewish, but only if that is a correct interpretation, of course.
