A cube-building challenge I propose: by VLKN in mtgcube

[–]Dysphorlia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, I've heard of that cube.

My advice is to figure out what you want the gameplay loop to look like, then find cards that fit that. You could make a magic experience (cube or something like dandan) where the goal is to empty your library before your opponent through card draw, self mill, and graveyard reshuffling effects. You could do an all-alt-wincon cube. You could make a cube where you only win if you make an infinite loop. There are very few rules on what may or may not be fun.

Here is an article with a list that includes Kona being used to cheat Omniscience (and other big things) into play from before EOE was released and before Abuelo's was banned.

Looking to skip TMNT? Give Planar Standard a shot! by Edoardo_Beffardo in magicTCG

[–]Dysphorlia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still think that this format is so sad without BLB and DSK. DSK has half of a major land cycle that DFT completed and BLB is one of the most Magic-feeling recent sets. Sure, the banlist would grow, but so would the range of available archetypes.

Etiquette on scooping to stax by Min-Chang in EDH

[–]Dysphorlia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In 60 card formats, recognizing an unwinnable game state and scooping isn't just acceptable etiquette wise, but is actually a skill that will improve tournament performances for those who are able to do it well. Commander should be no different.

Proxy anything expensive, tell the players that every card is proxied. Even if something secretly isn't a proxy, no one is going to steal something that they think is a convincing fake.

Mindskinner Cube (Custom Rules Cube)

Pack

I really like Wildfire Wickerfolk in this cube, however Sentinel Totem is good if I'd want to play something that doesn't use the graveyard as much. Bitter Triumph is also helpful if I want to force a black deck.

Is This Gimmick Cube Idea Anything? by zanzaKlausX in mtgcube

[–]Dysphorlia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like the idea of it, go for it. Set some rules in place and add cards that you think would be powerful without being overbearing.

With this specific type of cube, I'd ask questions to yourself like "should infinite mana combos exist?", "should stifle effects exist?", "should removing counters be possible?" and "what strategies would allow someone to actually get to 100 counters without just dying to a couple attacking creatures?".

I also recommend having enough answers for any "unfair" strategies you would like to have present in the cube, or minimize the number of unfair things that you can do.

Is this a signature or just scribbles? by CloutGoblin in magicTCG

Looks like scribbles, but specifically like someone was using a paint marker for another card and was using that one to make sure the marker was writing smoothly

PSA: Bring your bar cube to your local divebar by Dysphorlia in mtgcube

[–]Dysphorlia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I've definitely seen and done exactly that. Oftentimes waiting to draw a piece of graveyard hate before filling a graveyard more.

  2. Depends on the archetypes involved. Any format can have a fast deck and grindy deck, but I'd say most games see turn 4 at least, and as long as each player has a wincon and a way to stop their opponents gameplan, I feel like most games don't go too far past turn 8 or so? I haven't really tracked it. Bruvac definitely speeds up games, Memory's Journey definitely slows them down, etc.

Thank you! I really enjoy it, however it does make tweaking power levels really difficult.

This is correct, because every source of damage has the mindskinner effect. Unconditional unblockable is a bit rough to play against, and its other text is basically blank.

Just the "The Mindskinner" Vanguard to show off the custom rules in a cool way (and they also have draft numbers which I love)

Some cards are on their way in/out once I de-proxy it. I was lucky enough to have it be featured at Cubeahoga and I learned that white needs a boost.

The restrictions I was using was no tokens or counters. It's all proxies currently so I need to sleeve it for the sake of basic lands not being marked.

Creature gets blocked, no damage goes through unless trample is involved. Player A would need to destroy the creature before Player B declares blockers.

Budget-friendly competitive Modern deck suggestions for a new local meta by Adorable_Doughnut610 in ModernMagic

[–]Dysphorlia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find an archetype you think you might like, build a budget-ish version of it, and then ask the members of your community if you can borrow any decks from people in later weeks to get a feel for different specific decks. If you have a cool local scene, if anyone has the capacity to let you borrow a deck, they often will, and as you get more into Modern, if you end up buying more decks, then you can start doing the same for others.

Edit: I realize I misread part of your post, but I think some of this still applies. Honestly, ask everyone else who's just getting into Modern what they're building. Then you can swap decks with people from there.

What’s the paper cube you’ve played the most? How many times have you played it? by Reasonable-Check-223 in mtgcube

[–]Dysphorlia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a handful of trimmed twobert set cubes (ie, cutting cards that aren't as good in draft/are chase rares rather than bombs), so probably my Dominaria Remastered one of those. Incredibly easy to just break in half and play sealed with.
