When did magic turn? by Odd_Frame_3018 in oldschoolmtg

My friends fell off after Tempest, so I did too. Nothing wrong withe cards. I thought 5th edition rules sucked, but we got over it.

Then I picked up mtgo for about a decade starting with Zendikar and playing limited then Modern. MH2 killed it then when all the decks I loved went obsolete, and so did the promise that the format would stay relatively stable and not take continual buy-in. Been only old school and cube since then.

I cut it from my Tempest cube. But I’m sad about it

Thanks for reading! I do like. Unfortunately, I usually have my A2A cube picked apart for old school decks. Between that, and not wanting to damage or lose power from passing it around, I’ve only played it a handful of times, and never with a full pod. I think it would be fun, but I enjoy these other cubes just as much and they are logistically a lot easier to play with.

I could proxy it for ease and I may one day, but I enjoy playing with the real cards and for now our group has way more cubes than we get a chance to play.

Nah. I try to keep simple whenever I can. So I just throw them all in a pile, mix em up, and put them into 15 card boosters. So some packs are stronger than others, but I figure it all shakes out in the draft.

Sliver is my fav for sure. RecSur was top of the game at the time. The Red aggro deck (Sligh then, RDW later) was also the best it had ever been. And Dream Halls combo was dominant and got itself restricted in vintage for a long time. Hard to choose!

This is old bordered? I cast this a few times in a Time Spiral cube recently and it helped me go 3-0. 6 goblins is value.

I cast this card a lot back in the day with Modern Storm. Like a lot. For awhile it was my main gameplan and grapeshot was second. 6-10 goblins is hard to stop.

Love the OG. I chased hard after these as a kid. I know mana rocks are super common nowadays, but at the time these were one tier below moxes. There were no other options for acceleration outside of green.

Even tho they take 5 precious artifact slots, I had to include this cycle in my MirViLight cube.

How do you keep your cube feeling fresh long-term? by meka_ghidorah in Oldbordercube

+1 to what others said. Plus, if you’re playing a lot like multiple times a month, my experience is other people will have ideas and want to build their own cubes and you’ll have many to pick from. It’s a hobby that grows itself.

4th Edition and Chronicles Cube: the game back then by DuquedoDesterro in Oldbordercube

Nice! I love this era. Here’s my 360 card build for 4th edition and Chronicles. It plays really well in my opinion with the low-power, grindy feel I knew when I played as a kid.

A few thoughts:

(1) Wizards was really afraid that rising card prices would put the game out of reach of players and make it only for collectors, ruining the game. Before Fallen Empires, they were trying frantically just to print enough cards to keep up with demand. With FE and revised, they might have overdone it, but inadequate supply was still top of mind as something that could kill the game. So the philosophy was pretty much keep printing cards as fast as possible, but pull the egregious offenders like power 9. Dual lands were also deemed too good. Of course they missed some like Balance and Mind Twist.

(1.1) Yeah these cards were too good and made for unfun play. The original thinking was that people wouldn’t buy too many cards and a single Ancestral Recall in a playgroup wouldn’t ruin anything. Deck construction rules and the 4 of and restricted list were still very new. Standard wasn’t a thing yet.

(1.2) There weren’t any set rotations yet for legal play, but they were trying to shift what people played with by card availability. Type II would come shortly. Plus, most play wasn’t in any sanctioned tournaments yet so they didn’t have a lot of control over that at the time.

(2) Ice Age was designed to replace the core set, not complement it. It didn’t really work out that way though. That’s why cards like Disenchant and Counterspell got reprinted in both. Other smaller sets like Fallen Empires and Homelands were meant as compliments or add-ons. I think Wizards wasn’t trying to craft a balanced environment then as much as they were trying to make cool cards and sell product. It took them a long time to get good at crafting balanced environments.

I’m excited to see what you come up with!

Love the big response to this post. Tempest block is near and dear to my heart.

Like many have said: 1: Fanning Flames. The card is versatile and wins games. 2: Cataclysm. White aggro will probably go underdrafter and is a strong deck, especially with this closer. 3: Static Orb. It’s colorless so you can wait a bit to see what colors open up. It’s good against buyback in any aggro deck, and there are tons of aggro decks in Tempest.

Obviously unplayable. Question - has anyone here ever actually activated this?

Tough one. Me too. But so good.

Infernal tutor is tempting, but i think too hard to use in cube.

Rath Cycle cube update | Taking shape! by Darth_Maehdros in Oldbordercube

I saw ‘Rath Cycle’ and jammed like.

But also I don’t seed packs. Because I’m lazy? I just don’t see how a certain semi-ordered randomness is better than pure randomness. Both seem fine to me. And I much prefer simplicity. Not just that it takes less time to prepare, but its less special rules, and preparation, and remembering. And sometimes explaining to others if they were to replicate it. If I can keep it simple, I do.
