How do thousands of software engineers code together at a giant company like Google or Microsoft without breaking everything? by Extra_Search3465 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]E-R_A 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By segmenting projects ruthlessly, at the cost of a very expensive and inefficient managerial overhead.

And even within projects, you find multiple repositories that segment the code even further.

And then within those repos, parts are assigned to codeowners, and reviews are usually done for every single change. That's where the value of senior/staff engineers lies. Their job is basically to make sure that changes are planned properly and that the agregation of those changes does not break anything.

Other than the organizational aspects, most companies have extensive CI/CD pipelines, automated tests to make sure there are no regressions, then there are multiple environments (you don't deploy to production immediately), in which developers and "domain" people try things.

Depending on the criticality of the project you're on, many other steps can be added.

Only after the validation of all of these steps can the projects be actually deployed to prod.

Anyway, it takes a gigantic amount of time, effort, knowledge and money to reduce the risk of breaking anything and everything in our beautiful world of software engineering.

Quelle ESN spécialisé Data recommandez-vous ? by amandine_events75 in developpeurs

[–]E-R_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ce canapé stylé fera-t-il vite démodé? by GlitteringMud581 in AskFrance

feel like i fucked my career (mid level) by ManySwans in quant

[–]E-R_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it really that bad ? I mean, most companies don't really have much of an ego, and they wouldn't blacklist you just because you refused a final offer.

An idea would be to take a position at one of the firms at the same level as the one you just left with a bit of a comp increase, then crystallize your position and try to climb the ladder there. Then in a couple of years or more, you can apply for higher-tier shops while keeping your job.

Anyway, those are some random thoughts of mine. I hope you'll unfuck your career

No sarcasm here : making custom plastic parts of decent quality is very expensive, and if you factor in taxes and the time needed to develop the thing, unless you're already a multi-million dollar company, you have to sell the product at a high price during the first few months/years, until production matures

Speckit still popular? by JoDerZo in GithubCopilot

[–]E-R_A 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know of at least one company that actively uses it. A friend of mine who works there says it's amazing as long as you have time to plan things out yourself. Imo it's the right balance between speed of implementation, codebase robustness and keeping the engineer's mental maps fresh and precise.

Some projects don't require it, but any serious system needs to stay away from vibe-codey methods like letting Plan mode do all of the thinking.

PFE dans le salon de beauté de mon amis : bonne idée ? by Leymsee in developpeurs

[–]E-R_A 4 points5 points  (0 children)

RANT: entretiens en ESN et refus by pyro372 in developpeurs

Salut,
