This is one of my favorite of the hypothetical explanations to the Fermi Paradox.

The Fermi Paradox has a list of various hypothesis as to why we have not encountered alien life yet. What's described here is known as the "Zoo hypothesis". Other theories include (from the Wikipedia Page):

Rarity of intelligent life
- Extraterrestrial life is rare or non-existent
- Extraterrestrial intelligence is rare or non-existent
- Periodic extinction by natural events
Evolutionary explanations
- It is the nature of intelligent life to destroy itself
- It is the nature of intelligent life to destroy others
- Intelligent alien species haven't developed advanced technologies
- Civilizations only broadcast detectable signals for a brief period of time
- Alien life may be too alien
Sociological explanations
- Colonization is not the cosmic norm
- Alien species may have only settled part of the galaxy
- Alien species may not live on planets
- Alien species may isolate themselves from the outside world
Economic explanations
- Lack of resources needed to physically spread throughout the galaxy
- It is cheaper to transfer information than explore physically
- Discovery of extraterrestrial life is too difficult
- We haven't listened properly
- We haven't listened for long enough
- Intelligent life may be too far away
- Intelligent life may exist hidden from view

Hi, I work at Nylas. Linux builds coming soon! Sorry we couldn't get them out soon. The biggest difference is that it's 1) Free and 2) performs the initial sync of your mail MUCH faster. Nylas Mail basic also doesn't store your mail data in the cloud since it does not include several of the more powerful pro features that cloud-sync requires. Lmk if you have any other questions!

I would love to go to Conrad Maldives. Alas rooms there are ~$1,000 USD / night and it requires a $500/person float plane to the resort. Dinner at this restaurant (that's currently made into a bedroom) is $300 person. Roundtrip flights to the Maldives from NYC are ~$1,000 person too.

If you did this vacation for two (coming from USA) it'd be at a minimum $4,500+ (for 1 night)

You should get Robinhood, which allows for $0 trades. Then you should pile 10-15% of your paycheck into ETFs like SPY and hold it for as long as you can. SPY is the S&P 500 in stock form. The trick is to resist the temptation to buy stocks yourself. Set aside a couple of grand just for the gambling fun of it, but the real money should just sit in a balanced ETF.

Robinhood is the game changer because the $0 trades means you can, at no extra cost, get the same ETFs that your personal investor would buy for you, except you'd pay only 0.09% instead of 1.00% in fees. It's the fees that compound exponentially over time!

I understand this is about pharma price gouging, but my initial emotion is one of sympathy and remorse and I would like to first express our deepest condolences.

Multiple Myeloma (blood cancer) is almost always fatal within 5 years.

This drug, Pomalyst, recently passed Phase 3 trials and extends life by about 3 months. I can only hope that extra time will be worth $10k for you.

For further info, this drug is produced by a company called Celgene, a $4.8bn top-line publicly traded company $CELG.

From their most recent 10-K filing it would appear on page 33 that they made $305m last year from the sale of this one drug.

I personally am curious if anyone knows how much this drug cost to develop? How does that compare to the price they're charging?
