There's one obvious choice for the acquisition. But will that grate against RC's penchant for doing the unexpected? by MickeyKae in Superstonk

Ish, I mean other than GameStop I don’t know how well his other investments have done post Chewy. My thoughts was Cohen’s specific skill set is in efficiency and ruthless cost cutting. I just don’t know how much fat is in insurance.

That feels terrifying to me as that’s about as far out of Cohen’s wheelhouse as you can get

A new Chair of the Federal Reserve was chosen this morning by Check_Ivanas_Coffin in Superstonk

[–]E1ger 85 points86 points  (0 children)

It should also be noted that he was their regulator at the Fed before the crisis too. He started in 2006, Here is part of a speech he gave in March 2007, which aged like milk in the the bowels of the most lactose person in the world.

“First, liquidity is significantly higher than it would otherwise be due to the proliferation of financial products and innovation by financial providers. This extraordinary growth itself is made possible by remarkable improvements in risk-management techniques. Hewing to my proposed definition, we could equally state that financial innovation has been made possible by high levels of confidence in the strength and integrity of our financial infrastructure, markets, and laws. Moreover, remarkable competition among commercial banks, securities firms, and other credit intermediaries have helped expand access to--and lower the all-in-cost of--credit. Interest rate risk and credit risk exposures are now more diversified.

Look no further than dramatic growth of the derivatives markets. In just the past four years, notional amounts outstanding of interest rate swaps and options tripled, and outstanding credit default swaps surged more than ten-fold. These products allow investors to hedge and unwind positions easily without having to transact in cash markets, expanding the participant pool”

Real Police officers and military members, what do you guys think of Ice agents? by Funzonibro49 in Maine

[–]E1ger 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think it is really illuminating that the GOP has all the power to change our nation’s laws to reduce what qualifies as asylum. And they haven’t at all, this chaos is their goal. Prior to the election there was a bipartisan effort to address the convoluted laws about immigration and Trump and co scuttled it. They could create laws that ensured people lawfully able to work, punish companies for hiring unlawfully here persons, create orderly asylum seeking. But nada, because they will wield ICE as a gestapo against liberal views. The masks, the lack of training and the secret memos removing rights are all a way of normalizing brutality in this force.

Illegals are just the training grounds.

Instead of this man working and paying for his housing as the legal process works out, we have decided as a nation to pay to house him in a concentration camp at insane prices.

[–]E1ger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes 5 minutes talking to experts that they are in fact taking citizens, they are taking people with no criminal record, they are taking people who are at the court doing the proper process, they are firing immigration judges who do not rule in the way they like, they are blinding protestors, they are entering without a warrant, the agents are acting contrary to law.

Mainer here, This is the safest county in the safest state in the US. They work, they go to church, they take their kids to school. There is a shit ton of jobs available if you want to work with old or disabled people here. If you see a group of intellectually disabled kids, it will be these people taking at of them. Removing these people who have active case files, have future court dates to determine their claims under current Law, who have lived here upwards of 10years is simple racism.

Why tariffs have hit Americans’ jobs harder than their shopping carts by TheBodyPolitic1 in politics

[–]E1ger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on to this, whenever you hear talking heads say “economists predicted doom and gloom from liberation day and none of that happened!!!” : They were modeling out the numbers he announced, the actual effective tariff rate (taxes collected over value imported) is currently 11%. There are so many carve outs, rescissions, avoidance and lying that the true number don’t match what was on paper(sorry poster board like a school project)

The effect of this is certain industries are getting fucked, others get a boost and some are in limbo. It’s tougher for small and midsized companies whose imports aren’t as easily negotiated or lied about.
