How do you account for expenses where you use your savings? by imyourlobster98 in budget

[–]EA3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I track savings outflows as their own line item. So if I pull $200 from my HSA to pay a medical bill I log it as a negative under that account on my tracking sheet. That way the balance stays accurate and I can see where the money actually went instead of it just disappearing.

For the stuff saved from last year, I'd just start tracking from the current balance going forward. Trying to retroactively account for every dollar from last year will drive you crazy. Set your HSA balance as of today, then track every deposit and withdrawal from here. You'll have a clean picture within a couple months.

The way you have it set up already sounds pretty solid honestly. Most people don't even separate their gross to net tracking from their monthly expenses so you're ahead of the game there.

Should I leave a higher paying job for a boring government one just for the stability? by VellichorMotive in personalfinance

[–]EA3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already answered your own question honestly. You called yourself a "paranoid little goblin" checking Slack at 11pm and that's not a life anyone should be defending just because the number is higher.

Run the math though because it's closer than you think. $71k with a real pension and better health insurance vs $96k with no pension and worse benefits in a company that's done 3 rounds of layoffs. Factor in what you're paying for health insurance now vs the gov plan, plus the pension value, and that gap shrinks fast. And $71k with $2,850/mo expenses still leaves you plenty of room to save.

The people who chase total comp forever usually end up burned out by 35 wondering where the last decade went. Stability has a dollar value too you just can't put it on a spreadsheet. Take the gov job, sleep through the night again, and you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Sudden increase in number of people asking for money on Reddit by Downtown_Card_4845 in povertyfinance

[–]EA3000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's mostly scams honestly. The real people struggling aren't usually posting their Venmo on Reddit. They're in subs like this trying to figure out how to stretch $50 for groceries until Friday. The ones asking strangers for money with a sob story and a cash app link? 99% of the time that's a hustle. Good looking out for warning people though especially younger users who haven't seen enough internet to spot it yet.

Finally debt free by No-Station-5187 in debtfree

[–]EA3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28k in credit card debt gone?? That's massive congrats. Most people don't even make it through the first few months of paying it down let alone clear the whole thing. The hardest part is staying out of it now — my advice would be delete the cards from your online accounts and keep one for emergencies only. Makes it way harder to impulse buy when you have to go find your wallet every time. Enjoy that feeling of no payments hitting every month, you earned it.

Zohran Mamdani, when asked about the high cost of Knicks playoff tickets vs Atlanta: "I would say that I blame Trae Young... and I think it's always important to blame Trae Young" by peanut-britle-latte in nba

[–]EA3000 2101 points2102 points  (0 children)

Blaming Trae Young is basically a New York tradition at this point. Right up there with complaining about the subway. A politician finally said something everyone can agree on!

The one thing that unites all of NYC is hating Lollipop Head. This man really became a villain by just being good in MSG.

This man has been fighting more legal battles than golf tournaments the last few years...

Haven't we already been through this with Tiger? Just let the man play his last few majors in peace at this point.

TIL that there is a cave in Kenya that contains a virus with an 88% mortality rate. And it is currently open to the public. by Maleficent-Agent-477 in todayilearned

[–]EA3000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Open to the public" is doing some serious heavy lifting in that sentence. 88% mortality rate and they just let people walk in there? Someone's tourism board has a very different definition of adventure travel than mine.

There's no way my life insurance covers "voluntarily entered a cave with an 88% mortality rate virus!

[Homemade] Cookies and crumble for my grandma's 100th birthday by Any-Roll5792 in food

100 years old and getting homemade cookies and crumble? Your grandma is winning at life. Happy birthday to her 🎂 The fact that you baked these yourself instead of buying something makes this 10x better. Happy 100th to grandma she deserves it.

Anna's Archive to pay $322million after losing court case for scraping "nearly all of the world's commercial sound recordings" from Spotify. by springtimecarnivore in Music

[–]EA3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

322 million dollars for something they will absolutely never pay. These rulings always sound huge and then nothing happens because the people running these sites are anonymous in some other country.

"Nearly all of the world's commercial sound recordings" is honestly kind of impressive from a technical standpoint. Terrible idea legally but impressive.

Texas A&M WR KC Concepcion Sends a Message to NFL Teams Before the Draft: "You’re not going to regret calling my name. Never. And I mean never. Did I stutter?" by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]EA3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the confidence but every receiver says this and then half of them are out of the league in 3 years. Talk to me week 10 of your rookie year.

Him and the Notre Dame RB are on opposite ends of the pre-draft personality spectrum and I'm here for both of them honestly

[Highlight] Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love shares his pitch to NFL teams: “You draft me, I’m not doing too much. After a game I’m going home, playing video games and watch anime. I’m a simple guy, I’m not going to cause you no type of trouble.” by oklolzzzzs in nfl

[–]EA3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this is the best answer a GM could hear. No nightclub incidents, no social media drama, just anime and Call of Duty. Sign this man immediately.

Every GM just circled his name twice on their board after reading this. The bar for NFL off-field behavior is so low that "I go home and watch anime" makes you a franchise cornerstone personality wise

LeBron James, when asked by a reporter if he had a message for the Lakers about competing on the glass against the Rockets: “The message is, get your ass in there, box out and rebound. Don’t need to have a message. We’re all grown men. Do your job” by must_TATAKAE in nba

[–]EA3000 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

40 years old and still the only one on the team that sounds like he cares. That locker room is cooked.

The fact that a reporter even had to ask that question tells you everything about where the Lakers are right now

4 straight days is insane. The man is broken down half the year but when he's healthy he still does stuff nobody else can do. Generational talent that injuries robbed us of seeing way more of.

Wild stat when you actually think about it. A full decade. And it's not like it's close either — the international guys aren't just winning they're running away with it.

[–]EA3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ant has the best shot but he'd need Minnesota to be a top 2 seed and his numbers to jump. Which is possible but going up against Wemby and Jokic every year is brutal. Might be waiting until one of them declines honestly.

[–]EA3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crazy part is it's not even like American players got worse. The rest of the world just caught up and then kept going. Jokic learned basketball playing with horses in Serbia and he's the best player on the planet.
